VCU ponderings of a tinkering minkerton

Na, it is pretty crude but not useless. That slight dragging (for thats what it is) you get is same on all vcu type permanent 4 wheel drives. Now problem is for me (maybe you 2) is only really want 4x4 when we need it. The Haldex set up delivers exactly this. Our Tiguan has it and you just dont know its there untill its needed - by way its a souless thing ant I prefer my FL1, which drives like a normal car in Mondo but no 4 wheel drive. Haldex just works.

How do you find the Tiguan on mud or wet grass? I find it hopeless by comparison to my Freelander!! The Tiguan is ok as a road car in bad weather but from what i'v discovered it's no off roader. What's worse is it's been no more reliable than the Freelander with tonnes of expensive stuff done under warranty including a new Haldex unit!!

Won't be buying one of those then !

What does the new Dacia Duster look like to you guys? Looks to me like a cheaped up xtrail with really basic ESP. Methinks it will be pants off road but no worse than many others and considerably cheaper.

TBH it hasn't missed a beat. Goes like a train, with turbo doozal. Its the wife's (tried to persuade her FL2 but more dosh and she likes VW) and does not go off road as such. I have driven it in snow and ice it performs very well. Tyres are the issue as they are 100pc road. Modern take on FL1 (like so many others), designed for road with added safety of 4 Motion. I'm not keen on these soft roaders but wife loves it and finds my FL1 very odd to drive, says its heavy and no power - she feels more happy with mine in mondo (me too TBH). Funny how LR really kicked this off and then nearly lost the market - read somewhere that a smaller (than FL2) LR is in the pipeline.

The Evoque is already smaller than the FL2, how could they possibly go any smaller?

Well, I suppose Tiguan, that Fiesta on steroids, er Rav4 - this sort of territory and less pennies than Evoke. Its a huge market

My wife used to like her Tiguan but tbh it's been nothing but trouble!! It's not done 60K yet but it's had a new clutch and duel mass flywheel a new body computer because the auto handbrake keeps failing allowing the car to roll off all on it's own causing damage to the front bumper!! The Haldex unit has been changed as it suddenly went Bang on a snow covered road. It's had 4 windscreens so I assume they must be made of a new super thin glass? All the door handles repeatedly stick in the open position so need continual lubrication :( And the rear door started to creak so needed adjusting!! For a supposed quality VW it's not very good tbh. So bad in fact that she has just ordered a Vauxhall Astra GTC as a replacement!! The Tiguan is ok on fuel for a heavy car averaging 38.7 mpg around our Cornish roads and I suppose it's performance is'nt bad ether but she can't keep up with my Freelander V6 until the fuel runs out that is !! :)

Completely different experience of the same thing. This must tell us something?! wifey traded in an Eos for Tig and that never missed a beat. I had a Passat a few years back and have often wished I'd kept it. My perception is that Germany make the best cars overall - maybe this is wrong? In any event, I'll stick with LR - I just likes em!! Re Astra, my son has a late Corsa and it is a great little car.

16 models eh.

I would think that calls for the opening of a few more factories in Mumbai.

They possibly won't need the little ones here in the UK any more.

A very ambitious sahib is Mr Ratan Tata.

I hope you are wrong - sure you do to. But as we all know, this can happen when you sell off all your assets - you never get them back and the new owners are entitled to make business decisions as they see fit! It is to our shame that so little is actually British any more - though providing jobs for Brits, I get. Enough politics - its a car forum - doh!

Well, ours are all british and built under German or American ownership which is good enough for me :).

It'll all come back one day mate, the Chinese can't design worth a toss. When they run out of ideas they bought from us to make, we'll see what happens.
