I have just bought a 51 plate 5dr, 2.5 v6 freelander, it was purchased as a non runner.
Basically the thing will start and tick over fine, but when i press the throttle it refuses to rev past 1800rpm, the throttle linkage works fine and the vehicle has had a new TPS fitted, and is not showing any management lights. Being a former mechanic i removed the inlet manifold (found a fair amount of petrol smelling gunk inside) and did a compression test, they all came out at around 175psi. The plugs in the front bank of cylinders looked a good colour, whilst those in the rear were soaked in fuel, however when i checked them outside the engine i get a lovely blue spark, (from all the coils).
I have also checked the Cat, which is fine.
I have been fiddling with the thing now for about a week, and am considering breaking it if a fix cannot be found,
Any help on this would be much appreciated.

vis motors shagged or butterfly arm collapsed inside the plenum (inlet mani) does it rattle as its ticking over?

Thanks, the engine seems quiet when ticking over, with the vis motors removed the butterfly in the plenum seems very stiff initially when going from closed to open.
Is there a way of testing these motors? or can the butterflies be removed completely perhaps?

yup - Viz valves and motors - get a replacement inlet manifold from a rover75 - the same but cheaper. also fit a catch tank on the engine breather to reduce oil contamination.

Just been out and checked the VIS, and found the balance motor full of oil (although working fine) and the butterfly motor with a burnt out patch on the circuit board, the question i have now is do i get a fresh manifold complete or do i just get a new butterfly motor, what causes these to fail? How difficult should the mechanism in the manifold be to move? at present i can just about move it with my fingers.
Any help would be much appreciated guys.

they are a crap design!!! to get to the butterflies you need to split the plenum which isn't easy and chances are you won't be able to do anything with it anyway so you're best to change it for a good 2nd hand one or take a deep breath and get a new one at around 450 quid! have a nosey at xpowerforums.com plenty of info on there about repairing vis motors etc and if you do get it fixed/get a new one take MHM's advice and get a catch tank fitted asap, you'll be amazed at how much they pick up....

I have a pair of VIS valves going spare :)
Thanks, but i have just fitted a second hand manifold from an MGZT190, complet with both VIS motors that was running perfectly and still the problem is no better:mad:. it still takes ages to rev out and as soon as any load is applied to the engine it dies right down.
Out of interest, is there just one cat on these vehicles? I am not sure what the bulge/joint type things are just after the exhaust manifolds, there is one on each bank and i was wondering what was inside them.

starter cats... might be worth getting it hooked up to testbook and getting fault codes/live data off it now,,,,
