Uprated intercoolers.

Maybe a knatts cock miniscule barely noticeable difference.
Im still to be convinced a land rover really benefits from a larger cooler at all.
I fitted one to a td5 manual that was tuned to buggery a few years ago, it went the same and I never noticed one bit of difference, BUT did notice the viscous cut in a lot as the intercooler core restricted the air flow to the main rad.
I even went to the effort of measuring temps before and after the std and larger cooler, again no difference that I could see in the real world, might be different on a test rig.

Thanks for the reply, that's what l wanted to know at these larger intercoolers are not cheap.
What made me think it might be worth fitting one, was that in cooler weather (such as the evening after a hot day) the Defender definitely feels more responsive and l wondered if a larger intercooler might produce this effect.
But from what you've done in testing, it sounds like it won't.

Without the map or running higher boost I doubt it will make any difference.

On mine it reduced black smoke, power uptake feels smoother and noticed I could climb better off road. I.e more torque.

It's there to just to keep egt's down, you won't notice any gain in power. Is quite a good investment if your going to re-map it.

Thats the same with just about any engine, but even the most mild map will give you better results.

I put one on my 300tdi and the difference was massive although maybe because it's a clunky old engine compared to the TD5 which has turbo pick up most of the way through the rev range.

So just an uprated intercooler made a massive difference? no other mods at all, tweaked etc?

It did on my 300tdi. In addition to de-catting it, EGR blanking, K&N air filter and boost pin, which is the 300tdi of remapping, roughly anyway. I haven't touched the turbo or manifold.....yet!!!!
Better economy, cleaner exhaust, smoother power and pulls uphill better and a little quieter, or am I imagining. Not sure of the worth of putting anintercooler on a TD5 though since I know little about those engines. It may be worth giving your intercooler a good slosh out with thinners to clean it and see how that helps?

Thats a point remove and give your current IC a good clean, probs the best you can do without dropping £400 on a bigger one.

The whole point of an IC is to feed more dense, oxygen rich air which should result in higher efficiency and thus more power. So the bigger the IC the more dense and cooler air will reach the engine.

I already removed and cleaned out the standard unit.
It takes longer than you think to remove the intercooler from a TD5 Defender, it doesn't exactly fall out lol
After the replies above l have decided to leave the standard one in place.
