Hi Guys,
Joined the site to ask a fairly straightforward question that I don't seem to be able to find an answer to on the web. Anyone had any luck finding a universal intercooler/alternative cooler to use as an upgrade on the TD5. £500 for a cooler is just mad, I used to run a high performance golf on a merc sprinter van cooler and it worked a treat. There must be a tried and tested sub £100 alternative that a 2.5 derv and garret is happy running on.

Try an RS500 intercooler off a Sierra ;) £100 for a cheap one on eBay
Awesome mate, was digging through the spec of the TD5 cooler vs uprated and trying to google 'rear outlet intercooler' etc. and coming short. Will have to flutter my eyelashes at my tig welding mate to cut some brackets up but shouldn't be an issue, possibly just cut em straight off the old unit (not looked yet). Also, without googling, any merit in running a catchtank on these trucks to keep ****e out of the cooler?

Hi mate, brackets wont be an issue as most intercoolers come with little lugs on or parts where you can thread a bolt into so straight forward enough. As for the catch tank, unsure if you mean for the intercooler, as you dont run a catch tank on an oil cooler. If you mean for the breather system into the inlet (before turbo intake), then yes running a catch tank does help!

Sorry mean breather, Does the breather connect back into the intake or they just breathe to atmosphere? Not had chance to look properly under the lid yet! Only had her a week. Sam

Will fitting a better intercooler make any difference on a Defender TD5 with just a remap as the only other mod?
The guy who remapped it said that if l fitted an uprated intercooler he'd need to do further ECU alterations.
What if l just fit the intercooler?

No, not really other than a little more lag. You may notice it does pull a bit better when you push it so long at you fine tune your blow off valve/actuator or whatever your want to call it. The remap is where you can really start to make the most of those colder intake temps and higher volumes of air in the boost. I beleive on the td5 you should really replace the boost sensor to prevent the ecu going into limp mode and kangarooing, I *think* the remap should allow you to set the parameter for this higher anyhow.

My aim is to do decat, uprated cooler, egr blank and full fluid change and pipe cleanout before driving straight across for my map session. No sure yet whether boost sensor will need doing.

Looking at renault espace 3.0cdi coolers, they may be too big to fit but quite narrow (low lag) but will have a much larger cooling surface area. They go to 210bhp with a map and are strapped to a v6 derv so could be plenty for a straight 5 tdi block. Super dooper cheap too! Will investigate in the morrow.

Edit. It would appear that the espace coolers are pretty bloody wide in to out, 900 i think, whilst the uprated defender coolers are 750. Spose it's 'only' 75mm either way. But height is 400 in comparison to the 350 of 'super performance' td5 coolers. Will work through these figures tomorrow when not on my mobile.

That being the case, and as your questions indicate that you are not knowledgeable about landrovers, maybe it would be better to concentrate on learning to run a standard one reliably rather than trying all kinds of strange "upgrades" that you probably don't need anyway? :)

"Strange upgrades"... an intercooler and oil catch tank? I wan't her to have a little more poke, that's not so unusual is it?

Is there a thread on here for what to be checking on a 2000 TD5 110 to ensure I'm doing everything to make her run as reliably as possible? A kind of 'to do' list before you do anything?

On my much older tdi engines I tried a catch tank its seemed to attract condensation and make a grey sludge, in the end I routed the breather pipe to atmosphere and the intercooler pipework is still spotless inside, obviously if you do deep water work this isnt such a good idea!
So I fitted a blank to the inlet pipework so a few minutes with a screwdriver will make the engine waterproof again.

Ive got a alisport one in mine but it came with it, as noted above mine has been played with and im currently adjusting the waste gate to dump pressure at higher rpm as it starts to kangaroo and then runs flat due to over boosting. Im getting close to gettig it right but really need a boost guage to get it right as too much makes it sluggish.
