Update on Progress - with Pictures!

Hi all,

Am now out of hospital, so I thought I would put up the promised pictures of the progress on the Ninety.

We have a new bullbar, and last weekend fitted a new spare wheel carrier to take the weight off the rear door hinges.

As some of you may remember from my last thread, we also re-coated the chassis with the black anti-rust coating, so it is now well protected, and looks really good since I haven't had a chance to go off-roading and get the underside dirty since applying the coating. Also, the front bumper was sand-blasted, galvanised and repainted professionally, and looks very smart now along with the bullbar.

Since we coated the underside, I thought I would try to get some photos of it to show people how it looks.

I also included a shot of our home-made mudflap brackets which we built a few months back. They are made from aluminium, with stainless bolts holding them in place.

Are you allowed the bull bar now ?

A few years back they were getting banned and folk were getting told along with bonnet emblems they were bad for pedestrians. I was pretty sure the traditional bull bar wasnt allowed.

EU Directive 2005/66/EC.... it is illegal to sell or manufacture bull bars which dont meet this specification since 2007. I assume this is fairly strict ?

Can I ask where you got yours from ? It looks to have a bend on the bottom bar to accomodate a winch perhaps ?

Didn't know EU Directives reached as far as New Zealand!

This has inspired me to modify my front mudflap brackets... fed up with mud splattered door handles since fitting wider tyres.

Yes, lucky for me. And because the vehicle is from 1986, it is unlikely I'll be pulled up on anything as the vehicle predates any of those type of regulations (not sure what the regulations are in NZ, but I'm pretty sure you're allowed to fit bullbars, since I see trucks with great big heavy
ARB bumper/bullbars fitted all the time.

I searched everywhere trying to find one of these wrap-around bullbars. I didn't want to get one of those great big heavy ARB bars. The wrap-around ones look better in my opinion, and they protect the corners too. There were no second hand ones for sale anywhere, and because they aren't manufactured anywhere due to EU regulations, the Land Rover parts places in NZ (of which there are not very many) didn't have any.

Finally, without much hope of success, I emailed a smaller LR parts place which seems to specialise in high-performance aftermarket off-road accessories. They just happened to have a genuine Land Rover wrap-around bar which was new and unused. It must have been old stock since they don't make them anymore, but it is in perfect condition, and was much cheaper than a whole replacement bumper bullbar from somewhere like ARB. Understandably, I was very pleased to find it.

Good on you, our home made brackets are definitely stronger than the genuine ones I have seen, and it's always good fun to make something yourself.

In NZ it is often cheaper to make things yourself, as parts which are cheap in the UK have a big price increase when sold in NZ due to the high shipping costs from the UK to NZ.

I should also say that yeaterday we finished fitting a new driver's door seal to the LR. The old one was torn where the door latch had caught it, since it was the wrong type and stuck out too far.

This was a very fiddly job. Cutting the exact correct angle, and then gluing the corners was very, very tricky as there is plastic, metal and rubber to cut through in these seals. Then we had to use two different types of glue to glue them!

I will post a couple of pictures when I get the chance, but I didn't take a huge number.
