Undoing the timing pulley thingy

I have an auto v8 disco that I am slowly replacing the timing cover gasket. I am about to undo the timing pulley wheel and was wondering if anyone with a bit more experience had any tips? Tricks etc. I know I could take the starter motor off etc but as I am already at a snails pace I don't really want to faff any more than I need to !!!!!!!!

There are a few methods available for undoing the crank pulley. One is to lock the ring gear but I ote you don't really want to go that route. The second is to use a very sturdy breaker bar wedged on the chassis, then disconnect the coil or remove rotor arm then crank the engine - I've never tried it that way, just dont like it, large potential for collateral damage.

If your engine is the same as my RRC 3.9, I have found it is possible to lock the pulley by using a steel bar wedged in to the notch on the damper which is the thick thing behind the crank pulley. You need the bar to be long enough to wedge against the chassis or to reach under the air con compressor mounting, make sure you get a good bite and then get the breaker bar and heave away.

Please note, you can't wedge the steel bar against the ground because the engine mounts will allow the engine to rise and the whole thing will just ride over the bar, it is best to find a sturdy bracket/mounting on the engine itself.

Hope that helps you out.

did it using a couple of mole grips on the pulley that wedged on the pointer from the block. Had to take the sump off in the end ( Not able to drop it as Haynes reckons you could). Now to put it back together. Chain OK, so leaving it alone. Ta for the advice
