I have just fitted 265 75 16 tyres onto my 90 and now on full lock they rub on my steering guard

If i was to fit wheel spacers would this stop the rubbing but also would i have to get wider arches or say a 20mm - 30mm spacer be enough to keep them within my original arches

P.s my 90 has discovery axles fitted if that will make any difference
 
Why not just measure how much you can move the wheel out to stay within the arches?

Or adjust the steering lock stops and sacrifice a little of the turning circle. You might need to replace the stop with a bolt and lock nuts on a Disco axle for adjustment

If i put the spacers on amd they stick out il have to get the wider arches but i will measure how much they can come out by later

A lot of experience people on here would advise you against putting wheel spacers on as they say it puts more strain on the wheel bearings and cause them to go.
Also even with the wheel arch you will find a lot more muck gets thrown up onto the bodywork sides of your Defender. If I was in your situation I would try adjusting the steering lock stops first and see if you can live with a more limited turning circle. I couldn't and went for a more centered steel wheel rim where I was able to adjust the steering stops and reduce the size of the turning circle. Alloy wheels look pretty but don't stand up very well to abuse when the going gets rough. They tend to crack/split. For normal road use and leafy lanes they are fine.
 
I did have and accident the hose pipe came out and washed it all away haha

And yeah that is understandable to be honest this has never been offroaded and the most mud it has seen is when going to wales to the caravan

It was my old mans but now i have it and would like to maybe try a few green lanes but nothing majour

It did have steel wheels on but as we put disco axles on and the freestyles came with the donar disco we put them on aswell

I will probably just adjust the steering lock stops

I've lifted both my front wheels off the floor and my alloys are fine! Alloys are strong than steels but when they go they are ####ed and need replacing whereas you can repair steels a lot easier

Remember it's the top of the arch that has to cover the flat of the tyre. You are allowed sumat like 3% of the flat uncovered but saying that when you push it to the limit you can get into trouble from an asshat officer and trying your luck can sometimes get you in trouble! I had a Vectra that had some tyre showing even with camber but was legal and got a ticket I contested and still got a bollocking from the judge even though I proved it was legal!
 
I had the same problem as you...I fitted 25mm spacers and everything is spot on nowadays. I genuinely IMHO believe none of the nonsense re premature wheel bearing failure ( maybe in the 70's with wider wheels on a mini etc ) and is just something passed on down the www etc.
Get some quality wheel spacers as adjusting the stop locks ( I even tried a longer bolt ) won't make any difference.
Incidentely....does anyone have the part number for the metal stop lock plate that the stop lock bolt comes into contact with ( does that make sense? )

Agree'd I've had spacers on many cars and the wheel bearings have taken a much harder pounding that most landys ever will and I have never had one fail on me. well my BMW need 2 new rear ones but to be fair it was at 191k at the time lol

On a recent trip across Morocco in a convoy of four Defenders, one with Alloy wheels. We ended up having to lend our spare wheels as the Alloy's cracked going over the same terrain.
I bought some second hand tires which were on Freestyle alloy's. I put the tires on my steel's and sold the Freestyle alloy's to various people over here who had cracked there's.
I'm not sure they are stronger. I wouldn't like to trust a full expedition loaded 110 leaving the ground on alloy's.
