Typre choice

Well my Pirelli Scorpion ST tires are up for renewal and I am looking around for tyre recommendations from people. I am very happy with my Pirelli but was thinking of a more off road bias tyre, the ST are road bias.

So I was looking at the Pirelli STR, which seems to be a new generation of the ST with no real change in tread.

I did come across the Bridgestone Dueler H/T 689, which seem to be a road bias tyre like the Pirelli ST and STR but the tread seems to be better for 4x4.

Bridgestone also have this 'Plus One' Concept of loading the wheel with a slightly larger tyre. They info says the overall diameter of the wheel stays the same so the speedometer is not effected. Has anyone any experience with this?

If you want an off road bias tyre, All Terrain tyres give a reasonable performance without the extreme tyre noise or on road handling problems that you might expect from Mud Terrain tyres.

There seems to be a consensous of opinion that BF Goodrich ATs are good - I use 215/80 I think, although Colway ATs have exactly the same tread patterns and are half the price.

Although mine are fairly worn, I find little in the way of extra road noise and on road handing has remained viceless.

If you're buying tyres online, try this firm. Factor in £10 a tyre for your local tyre place to fit them if you dont change your own tyres.

Ah, so you won't want a tread that is too aggressive. Mud terrain tyres tend to dig into soft sand. You would probably want something more road-biased/AT-style or proper sand tyres.

I use Michellen 4x4 Synchrone 225/55 R17 101H EL

OK for dry, damp and snow covered soil.

Well I eventually got a full set of Pirelli Scorpion STR tyres. A great improvement over the Scorpion ST set that I had. Better off road, I did some soft sand beach driving over the weekend and some mountain track driving and immediately noticed the improvement.
I had to rescue a friends Dodge Durango last night, tough going but quite good grip for a small, small SUV.

FYI: There is no mud in the United Arab Emirates, mainly desert, hard dirt and mountain tracks.
