Hi All.
I am thinking of changing the turbo on my 1999 TD5
Although the turbo works ok it is the original and has done a little over 100k,
I am looking to change it ,with possibly an uprated unit ,
Has anyone any recommendations ?? Has anyone got a GOOD turbo for sale ( no garbage please ) must be new or close to it .
Any advise would be greatly appreciated
Thank you .

100K on a turbo isn't that much if it has been looked after with regular oil changes and allowed to spin down before turning off. I'm at 180K on mine (300) and it still feels fine and produces full pressure. What makes you think you need a new one?

Just been busy with work and as the drover has morphed from a drive ornament to my daily whip I'm more invested in the site :D. I all seriousness, I have 204 large on the clock and although he's been well maintained I would like to ensure the turbo is tip top anorl, so either a rebuild, recon or new unit might go on my Christmas list.

Well, it's good to see you about again. Read plenty of reviews for your replacement turbo supplier. I bought from a place recommend on LZ. First one was carped. TBF, good service amd communication from the company and they did swap it out. Not sure if that would have happened if I hadn't sounded so knowledgeable and/or hadn't slipped on to the conversation that I was a member of a very large LR forum!

That's why I replaced mine as the engine was from my 90 which the p.o. had fitted a Def 200tdi into was originally a 2.5td so I don't know the history of the old turbo so as i'm doing a 200tdi-series conversion aswell as a full 2a rebuild I decided on fitting a new 300tdi turbo mainly as it help fitting the intercooler pipes easier and looks better aswell, saves chopping into the inner wing :)

Well the car just seems a little lazy ,and i was thinking of a remap ,so a refurbed turbo would be a good place to start,

Much like the other replies say, 100k is nothing on an turbo that has seen enough oil changes - you regularly see 300k+ mile original turbos still working fine, just check for lateral play along the shaft (should be none) and side to side play, which should be around 0.5mm ish either way, but as long as the blades do not contact anything it's generally fine. Other than that as long as it's not passing loads of oil she'll run another few hundred thousand easily.

If you're adamant about changing it when your current one is fine, you may as well put your hand deep into your pocket and buy a VNT / VGT (both the same tech) upgrade unit - will hugely improve the low down (from idle) response, and have somewhat higher flow efficiency at high RPM. Most of the turbo retailers sell them, such as turbo dynamics or turbo technics - think allisport is a stockist for one of them as well.

If it is working, and not much oil coming out of it, I would leave well alone.

Thank you for your help and advise ..I can now make a better informed decision
Will start by checking for play before i spend my money.
