TD5Alive did me a stage one re-map while I was at Billing earlier this year... as promised the drive home was a vast improvement.:D

I went a step further and got Ashcroft to fit a 1.2 ratio (Disco) transfer box... it's a dream to drive now... total transformation - power to overtake and comfortable cruising. The only time I've had a problem was towing a 2 tonne trailer up a steep hill... but then, that's what low range is for.

If you can wait, chat to the guys at one of the shows, and they often have show offers to do the job there and then.

I'm thinking of the EGR bypass kit next... not sure I'd go as far as the intercooler upgrade.

For anyone get a remap I would recomend get the EGR bypass kit and fit a De-cat pipe before getting the remap, this way the map will take into account the extra clean air and and faster pick up speed of the Turbo.

Minidod,

Does this mean I have done it wrong... will I need a re-re-map after fitting the EGR bypass, and de-cat pipe:confused: bit costly...

Recently had my TD5 2003 remapped and it has made a vast improvement to the driving and take up speed, over taking is now worry free.
I would recommend when you have yours done it's ona dyno so they can see if any engine probs exist. The guys who come to you only drop a prebuilt map on your ECU and it may be too much for your car.

Make sure you find a tuner who will give you a custom re-map, not just a generic one. The map has to be read from the ECU and then the data gets modified by eye, depending on the tuning parts fitted and things such as tyre size and transfer box ratio etc... If you've had a re-map and were never asked exactly what set-up your Land Rover has, then be suspicious.

As much as it pains me to say it, even some of the bigger tuners don't this - I won't say who in public, but you are certainly safe with Td5 Alive. Don't forget that Gary comes from a computer programming background. If you've ever met him you will understand why he is as good as he is.

Thanks for yesterday,I got 5 miles from home before the BONG - Trans failsafe prog ! Then 2 miles from home the fuel light came on again  Wouldnt want to feed that on a daily basis.....
Was a relief to get back into a decent car today,;) Dont forget to invoice me for the lamp, cheers Jon.

So what is the owner going to do? Repair it? Burn it?

Will send out an invoice on Monday. Thanks for your help with that other problem Jon. Needs fresh eyes to see things sometimes (even your eyes :D ).

I have a K+N panel filter, de EGR'd, deCAT'd, centre box removal pipe. Is it worth going for a bigger intercooler before an ECU reprogramme or will it still pick up the larger 'cooler after the reprogramme ?

Dynachip did miune and said no point doing the intercoller they have then running a lot more than a standard remap with standard intercoolers no probs. In fact he said they have checked temps and they were perfect on standard inter cooler.

I had alive tuning do a remap on mine and although it didn't make any differance to the mpg it really did up the performance and towing has been made alot easier, it's not the cheapest but i've no regrets.

first of all sorry to drag up this old thread.

How would i know if my td5 defender has had a remap?

i bought it a week ago and was told it has an "economy remap" not sure what that means but it goes like stink, i was also told it has a larger intercooler. looked under the bonnet and it certainly is well big!

I know bugger all about this kind of thing so go easy on me. There is a connector just tucked under the cubby box at the front, is this standard or something extra for the remap?

and what is a "MAF"

Thanks

mr newbie. Matt

the connector under the cubby box is the diagnostic plug used for reading the fault codes, chances are if it has a larger intercooler then it will be remapped, if its a performance intercooler it will be alluminium rather than the plastic case of the original

The connector is the diagnostics port and is standard on the TD5.
A standard intercooler is about a third the height of the radiator whereas most uprated ones are nearly the same size as the rad.
Unless the ECU has had a sticker stuck on it you wont know just by looking whether your mapping has been altered. Some higher tuned mappings need a little gizmo to fool the ECU as the turbo boost is turned up. These are normally fitted in the underseat box alongside the ECU.

Thank you all,

So i havent had much time to "mess" with things. ill investigate the under seat box, ill see if i can figure out how to get in there.

Thanks again

Matt
