Trouble with starter motor turning!

Hi, once I connect my battery up ( and is fully charged) I go to turn the ignition and the relay just starts clicking but one time there was a bang like the sounds of a fuse but I checked the fuses and there was one broken and I replaced it and then turned the ignition key again and all that happens is the relay clicks, but I can't find what the problem is can anyone help? The engine is a 200tdi defender engine
 
presuming this is when you turn the key to engage the starter?
what motor is it in?

just re read first post, 200 tdi defender.
little clicking or big clicking?
(as in indicator click or door handle click?)

Id say its is solonoid or its jammed. Easiest way is to get a mate to turn the key while you listen to see if its getting power, or get ur multimeter out. Or remove it and shove it on the bench a test it.
 
Hi, the other thing it could be is a bad earth.
Connect a jump lead from the earth on the battery to a good earth point on the starter.
It would not be a bad idea to do the same with the live. This will help deliver more current to the starter itself.
If this does not work then try jumping it with the leads still attached to the starter, and another car of course. lol :)
If this does not change anything then i agree the starter will have to come off.

solenoid by the sound of it.
possible causes but not limited to-
not enough power in battery,
bad connection at battery, starter, earths,
bad contacts in solenoid,
worn brushes in starter,
stuck brushes in starter (been mud plugging or wading?)
seized engine.
 
having same problems with mine ,going to test this weekend if weather is not too bad ,hopefully just a faulty earth ,
had problems with the yellow starter relay for sometime having to flick relay to get it to start ,had two new relays so far ,this time think it more serious ,:confused:m
 
Found out the problem I turned the engine manually, because the cog in the starter motor was in the gears so moved it out, and changed the solenoid.
