Rebuild a petrol engine, the starter doesnt like to throw it around. Happens on a charged battery. Took out the ignition so doesnt spark/wrong timing.
Bought the starter used, but rebuilt and refreshed. Anyone has any clues? Please see attatched video.

You need a new Battery. Also, check your Earth Wires. May need a new Starter, however, I don't think you will.

This is the battery i use in my driving landrover. It throws that around fine. I dont think the battery is bad. Earth and positive are just jump leads i connect with the terminal and ground. I wouldnt think that is neccesairily bad?

unlikely a short, if it drains quickly then i would want to double check the battery. do you have a dvm/volt meter? you really need to check the voltage while its cranking

There are very few components on the Starting Circuit. Battery, Ignition Switch, Solonoid, Fusebox, Starter Motor, Positive and Negative Cables. Poor Grounding can cause all sorts of problems on these Landys.

I could do that yes, what would/should it tell me?
well to start with, you should have at least 12.7v at rest, dropping to no lower than 10.5v while cranking

you can test the earth by running a jumper cable from the starter body (where it bolts to the chassis) direct to the battery earth terminal

do your headlights work? are they nice and bright or do the dim quickly?

The engine is in a test rig. Its not connected to anything else; Ergo, its outside any wiring harness. Im just running starter cables from an external battery to the starter motor.

Then check the village before and during cranking

Can you turn the engine by hand? Has it ever been running?
i will, yes engine turns by hand. Has a heck of a compression though. But nothing weird i presume. Has ran shortly with a fully charged battery and when it just "caught", if you get what i mean. Still turned slow, just happened to fire up. Makes me think there is nothing wrong with the engine per se

You'd expect the higher compression, although is it possible that the tappets are a bit loose, which wouldn't help?
I am thinking that this is typical of parts that wear in harmony. As the engine got looser and the starter got weaker, but you didn't notice it, until now.
Also jump leads do not give as good a connection as proper terminals.
If it were mine, as mentioned above, I'd give the starter a dose of looking at and refurbing.

its a petrol engine so shouldnt be too hard to turn by hand.. i can turn mine with the fan when its off compression, then apply a bit of pressure to the fan belt to stop it spinning but still not 'hard'
mine has good compression (for a series)
