Can anyone help me with the trouble I have with my Freelander? It felt like I was braking when i wasn't. the rev counter bounces up and down and then sometimes would just cut out completely and not start again. I have read bits of posts on here and followed some of the advice. When reading some threads I thought oh mabe that EGR thingy they are on about so got it taken off I cleaned it and got it put back on. This made a big difference but after a couple of days was doing the same thing just not cutting out completely (up to now) so read some more and now I think it may be the MAF thingy they are on about on some threads. Can anyone please tell me where I find it and how to clean it as I've read you can damage them somehow when cleaning it. Please bear in mind I am a woman and don't know the technical names of things or could it be another problem i have as i have noticed when i first start it up it fires out loads of blue smoke but only when it is first started after not being run for a good few hours but doesn't do it when I am driving. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome.

Just a couple of points before you get pounced upon (metaphorically, of course), get yourself along to the "Introduce yourself" pages and let us know a bit about you.

Then the best thing to do is ask your question in the Freelander section (scroll down on the home page).

How are you with the standard payment method here ... CAKE!

Oh and by the way, round here they're known as gaylanders for some unknown reason.

Yep, what he did say:5biagree::5biagree::5biagree::5biagree::5biagree::5biagree::5biagree: The Gaylander bit is pretty self explanatory though:D:D:D:D

Sound like something is wrong with the ECU (Engine Electronic Control Unit) or the signals being sent to it. Get it checked for water or oil contamination first.

When reading some threads I thought oh mabe that EGR thingy they are on about so got it taken off I cleaned it and got it put back on.

The EGR thingy (Exhaust Gas Recirculator) is a device fitted to many modern diesel engines to meet the exhaust noxious emissions regulations in some export countries. In most cases in the UK it can be safely removed and blanked off.

Now I think it may be the MAF thingy they are on about on some threads. Can anyone please tell me where I find it and how to clean it as I've read you can damage them somehow when cleaning it.

The MAF thingy (Mass Airflow Sensor) could be the cause of the problems. It's located at the rear of the engine, near the oil filler cap and the air filter. Cleaning can be a delicate job and can easily damage the unit beyond repair. Replacement is the recommended way of dealing with a faulty or suspect device. Search the forum for further details.

I have noticed when i first start it up it fires out loads of blue smoke but only when it is first started after not being run for a good few hours but doesn't do it when I am driving.

Difficulty starting a cold engine combined with loads of blue/black smoke is often a sign that one or more glow plugs have failed. Again search for more information.

If you removed, cleaned and replace the EGR yourself you can't be that bad, you just don't know the proper names for things. Don't put yourself down.

Thanks everyone for your response. I'll go and introduce myself like Brian47 said i should do. Not sure what the standard payment CAKE thing is though i'm not good with internet either lol

There's lots of really helpful people, and if someone helps you out, i.e. physically helping sort your motor, the cake and chips (Not together, that would be wrong:eek::eek:), are actually classed as currency round these parts:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Oh get it now! I think!! lol I'm fine with cake and chips then :D
