Trip Spares, 2 X D2's and 2 X Trailers To Europe

We are taking our two Ruston & Hornsby diesel engines to the Nuenen show in June, and then leaving the engines in Holland and driving down to Carpentras near Mt Ventoux in the south of France for some sunshine. About 3 weeks in all and 2000+ miles. Mine will be towing for the whole trip, Philips just the Nuenen leg of the trip.

Apart from our normal fairly comprehensive tool kit, we have included the following spares for the two V8's:

One each front and rear hub with ABS sensor
Aux belts
Spare front propshaft
Set of UJ's and centering bearing
Propshaft bolt set
Rubber donut + bolts & nuts
Alternator brushes and bearings
Plugs
Fuel pump
Idler bearings
Belt Tensioner
Premixed coolant
Bulb sets
Couple of wheel nuts

Bearing sets for the trailers
LM2 Grease
Grease gun
Hawkeye

Both have had oil and filters changed recently, both have good brake pad thicknesses. Both should be on LPG by the time we leave next week. All the transmission fluids changed today, gearbox, transfer box and axles.

Anything I have missed?

Why not take some windscreen wipers? They don't take up too much room and it is nice to be able to see where you're going. Plus some stuff to put in the washer bottles and a device for scraping the flies off.

We carry concentrated screenwash and a squeegee/scraper all the time.

Good. This was really brought home to me the weekend before last when my windscreen was getting plastered with flies just driving round Wales. The wipers wiped the wings of some of them but the little bodies needed a good scrape.

Take some oil as well, if I were you. Are there any electronic components which will disable the cars if they fail? I carry a spare crank position sensor for my TD5, for example

We keep a new CKP sensor in the passenger door pocket, plus a camshaft sensor, both new.

The spare hubs turned up this morning, makes you wonder how they make any money out of them! Quality looks OK, ABS sensor included plus drive shaft nut and bolts for front hub.

Taking a loooong 3/4" bar with us and 1-1/4" socket.#

I assume you're going by ferry as you probably already know you can't go through the tunnel with LPG converted vehicles

Also in France you have to carry an emergency kit which includes a breathalyser which seems a bit odd

Self amalgamating tape has a multitude of uses

I believe the breath test requirement has been dropped, worth checking but they are cheap enough to carry anyway.

I don't think the requirement to carry two breathalysers has been dropped as such, just not being enforced. The effect of the law is that you have to carry two, because if you think you may be over the limit you would have to use one to check that you are not. But you then could still not drive as you would now not have a breathalyser in the car. Only the official mind.................

We do have LPG but we prefer to go by ferry, gives us a break from driving and we usually have a full cabin so can have a kip.

Got breathalysers, hi-vis jackets, bulb sets, 4 triangles, etc etc.

Neither D2 has any history of problems, but when we are in rural France, there aren't too many Landy dealers!

Got to run over the trailer wheels and brakes before we go, small trailer has just had two new axles so should be OK, big one has done 2000 miles since new, but worth checking everything.

Got so many gadgets now, had to get a 4-way car sockert to plug everything in.

If the trailer has odd size tyres consider getting an extra spare wheel

I once hit a lump of metal puncturing 2 tyres on a 4 wheel trailer , the only company that made that size were Michelin , the nearest I could find any was 40 miles away.

If they're a common size it shouldn't be a problem

We carry two spares for the 6-wheel trailer and one for the 4-wheeler, all the same size and stud pattern.

Discoveries have the same size tyres etc.
