Hi All and hello from a newbie with his first Land Rover, ive just bought a 3.5 V8 Auto Discovery on an L reg as a second vehicle and to do some green laning as its only done 85000 miles and was imported from Saudi 10 years ago its really tidy, problem is i cant get the transfer box lever to work, the previous owner had said he had never touched it so it's been in high range for god knows how long, it wouldn't move but with some force it went into neutral then into low but pops back out again, it goes into neutral and high range fine but it won't go into anything else so no diff lock, it will not go over to the left and i dont want to force it, has anyone got any ideas to free it off? Oh and you don't have to be in Low to engage difflock.

Linkages are stupidly built flimsy things though. I'm gonna see about making up a new set of remote ones for mine

Get underneath and get someone to wiggle levers you should be able to see em moving. Lots of releasing spray and wriggling back and forth left to right type thing A big screwdriver or medium sized pry bars helps..

I found if you have access to the top just pop the lid off the linkage itself and hit it with a wooden drift as it was the internal bit on mine that seized

Shhh I got told to leave it alone after I put the new sensor in. And I mean a "don't ####ing touch it not once not at all untill you have the right tool"

If it's been seized for a coons age, the all the wd40 in the world wont sort it from underneath, you'll spend an hour or so with your arm shoved up the side of the box, trying vainly to pop enough clout behind hitting the top of the linkage, to no avail...
You'll grease up your arm good and proper, develop tourettes, and be no closer.
Take out the center console, remove the steel plate rivetted above the rubber gaiters, take that off, take the 4 screws out of the casing top, pop an adjustable spanner on the flat end of the shaft.. (after disconnecting the linkage ) and work backwards and forwards to free up, then gently apply sideways pressure, all should be well
by all means use a release agent at this stage, as you can clearly see where to aim it.. grease the internals before refitting everything

I can take a while. If its been in on position for a number of years.
If you follow the tips you should be OK. If you can spare a couple of hours out of your life just sit there and keep working it. ( Top tip.. do not do it in a public place ie. asda carpark when MILFs are shopping..security get concerned and may call old bill.. "I have got a sticky diff officer" sounds so lame.

Hi Andy, you do know that you have to put the autobox in neutral BEFORE moving the hi-lo lever don't you?
Hi all, ive got it to select Low range now by just working the lever alot, its good as gold now apart from i still cant get the lever to go to the left to engage diff lock so i'm stuck, i think the linkages ive been messing with are for the handbrake? has anyone got any pics of the linkages from underneath? Thanks for all the help.
