I've noticed a slight leak on my transfer box. It's coming from the front of the case, running down and dripping from the nuts on the bottom.

I topped it up and it took about 300ml of oil. It's been 8 months since I changed the oil in it, but I've not done many miles in that time.

I had a search and did some reading. It seems likely that the issue is the front oil seal. I've not worked on the drive train, so I thought I would post before doing anything.

I was surprised to see, the seal can be replaced in situ

Is it worth going down this route to see if it fixes the leak? I'm not experiencing any other problems with the t box. Is there a kit for this? My transfer box is whatever mates to the LT77 (can't remember the model at the mo).

Perhaps this is the problem I am having with mine too.

I did the rear diff pinion seal a while ago, similar method.

If it's pretty obvious that the leak is from there it's got to be worth it for the cost. I better have another lie under mine.

front output seal will be pretty obvious leak ,coming from behind flange ,a leaking intermediate gear shaft is another common leak but harder to see and looking like a leak between both boxes

As above, is it the output seal or input seal?
The input seal requires the transfer-box to be removed as it is behind the gearbox. Did mine recently when I replaced the clutch.

The flange area looked dirty and damp. I think the leak is very small but has probably been going on for a long time.

Is the intermediate gear a box out job? If all the seals are easy enough to do and don't require and special tools, I can get the box out, I have an engine crane - at least until Landyfox gets his hands on it :)

Is there a rebuild kit for all the seals?

intermediate shaft is but not a strip down job ,output seals differe depending on mudshield fitted but ftc4939 fits both types, input is icv100000,silicone between flange washer and flange helps seal shaft

I appear to have a similar leak, and have taken a picture.... the oil 'flow' seems to be sufficient to keep the area clean!
Can anyone confirm my fear that this is the input seal leaking?
From the look of this should it be a priority... as I will have to get someone to do it for me - any idea how much I should expect to pay?... pain, as the seal is probably only a few pence!

I think like already mentioned it could be 3 things,

1 - input seal leaking
2 - intermediate shaft O rings
3 - oil creeping up threads on bolts (mounting bolts)

I have the same on my disco 2, going to remove transfer box and replace input seal and O rings.

Did the intermediate O ring on mine by moving the transfer box back a couple of inches giving enough space to push the shaft forwards to expose the O ring and change it.Left the rear O ring alone as it was not leaking. Tricky but can be done. That does look like a typical intermediate shaft leak.

Cheers guys... as I thought:(
Now to see if I can get it done... have tried Ashcrofts as they fitted both main and transfer boxes as recon units about 20,000 miles ago - but crucially long enough ago for their warranty to have expired...
