Hi.
My Range Rover TD6; 2004 Model; 3L Diesel occassionally beeps whilst driving then gives the error: "Trans failsafe prog"
but continues to drive smoothly! The error normally comes at speeds between 80 - 120km/hr.
What could be the problem? What should I do?
I also noticed that it takes slightly long to accelerate from low speeds whilst revs go up dramatically. Is this engine sluggish? Please advise. I am a new owner.
My model is: SALLMAMC34A

^^^^ what he said.....

The failsafe - get you home mode, usually locks the gearbox in say 3rd gear, so this slow acceleration and high engine revs, is the torque convertor slipping to get the car moving, like getting a manual car to move in 3rd gear you have to slip the clutch a bit so as to not stall the engine....

Whilst its true that the gearbox could be dying, you need to get it on Testbook to see whats going on.It might be nothing at all to do with the gearbox, but bad info coming to the gearbox ecu from another one.If the gearbox ecu receives invalid data from another ecu,say the engine or ABS one it will see it as implausible data and be unable to make decisions about what to do.It then throws its toys out and puts a message up on the dash, defaults to 4th gear and thats it....

Hi Edmore,
Sorry chap but your gearbox is just about to die. Probably torque convertor failure with the resulting bits killing the autobox. Budget for £1500 for replacement or if you are in the Midlands PM me for a transmission specialist who rebuilt mine. In the meantime don't go far and join the AA.

So what kind of electro-telepathy do you use for this highly accurate diagnosis ? Could be as simple as a poor connection on a multiplug.
No wonder the garage trade has to struggle to raise public favour.Accurate diagnosis and explanation are key to a sensible solution - NOT the parts/credit card shotgun.

Hi eightinavee,
No electro-telepathy required, just a little experience.
My vehicle exhibited the exact same fault before Christmas before leaving me stranded in a dark Devon country lane, and the well documented fragility of the GM gearbox failing after 80k miles leads me to suspect the box has had it's day.
I hope it is a mere poor connection or minor electrical fault and I believe oil cooler failure can cause the system to go into limp home mode in an attempt to increase oil flow through the system.
No one can accurately diagnose a vehicle fault on a website forum, all any member can do is offer their advice based on their own personal experience.

Exactly - which is why a quick session on Testbook is needed, rather than just saying its dead.
Customer brought in a TDV6 Sport this week which kept on going into limp home mode,he was worried the gearbox was dead.Nowt wrong with the gearbox, just a faulty brake light switch.....

Hi.

The vehicle has done 130,000 miles on the clock. By the way when the error appears it seems to clear itself whithout any action on my part!!! I wonder if its an intermittant fault or major one as you say
