Not sure with early models but most S3's had them as most was fitted with the Dixon Bate adjustable tow hitch which had the plate that bolted underneath the rear X member, think the idea was with the adjustable hitch where the single / 2 pins went through the adjustable drop plate there was a lot of play between the plate and pins, mite have been ok when the adjustable hitch kit was new but if it had a hard life there would have been a lot of ware causing it to snatch back and too when slowing down and setting off, you can still get the Dixon Bate adjustable tow hitch kit for Disco's and Defenders as they have the EU rating but you can't get a new one for a series as they didn't have the EU rating and you can't fit one off a Def / Disco either as all the holes are 1/2 an hole out trust me i've tried unless you mod the X member or tow hitch and not sure how you would go on if involved in and accident or what ever so i decided to leave it and just fit an LWB drop plate and ball
