torque converter noise

Optimistically speaking - let's assume that the grinding / whirring bearing noise isn't the torque converter or the transmission... everything feels smooth in that area and gear selection is operational without fault.

This leaves the notorious front diff / shaft issue.

Having read some useful info (thanks SaintV8) it appears that LR Customer support hasn't been completely honest with me over my 'VIN' not being effected by the front diff recall - and it definitely hasn't been upgraded.
- at 73k and an easy life - it could just be showing the signs of failure.

The splines may still be holding on - but another effect of the misaligned front shaft is lateral pressure on the diff input shaft and tapered bearing respectively.

Could it be that the initial noise is the knackered diff tapered bearing running dry until the first few minutes of driving distribute oil from the main housing of the diff? Even though the loud 'whirring-bearing' noise does disappear quickly - I do have very light whirring after the car has warmed up.

I'm back to speaking with LR Customer Support with a view to getting the Front Diff recall done. They've made it clear that the recall ended in 2011 - and I purchased the car in... yes you guessed it.... September 2011. The way the conversations are going with LR - I'm being asked to demonstrate that the diff / shaft is actually failing... I'm at the mercy of my local main dealer's inspection of the diff now. I'm hoping that their approach is that it's in their interest to write-off the front diff / shaft assembly in order to get the upgrade approved by head office... and consequently 'paid for the work'.

I'll keep you all informed as to how many more hoops I have to jump through before they (if they) offer assistance.

Thanks again everyone. If you have any additional comments on the noise in the video - please continue with your input for the benefits of others on here.

Mark.

Kozzi, did you ring John???

Hi SaintV8.

You do come highly recommended along with Phil - and you appear to be more active on here than Phil gets time for... so I'm hoping you'll lend me your 'experienced ear' and have a quick look at / listen to - the video youtube link below:

L322 Whiring Grating Noise - YouTube

Range Rover L322 V8 4.4 Vogue 2003 Model.
73k mileage - with all service stamps.

It's suffering noises from my gearbox (I think) and would really like an experienced ear to have a quick listen and determine if it is transmission issues.

I've been systematically working my way around my engine bay - trying to discover what on earth this noise is... what's broken... and how expensive it's going to be to put right?

Noise: High Pitch Whirring / Grinding / Dry Bearing kind-of sound.

Have replaced alternator / power steering pump / tensioners / belts...
Have removed 'Both' Belts and driven - noise still present (so nothing to do with any of the pulleys on the front of the engine.

Changed all fluids including trans / transfer box / diffs / engine / power steering (all fluids).

It looks like it didn't have the front diff recall - spoke to LR last week & they told me my VIN wasn't effected by this issue???? Hummmm???

Noise only happens when engine cold.
Only happens on take-off in 1st gear and much less in 2nd. By the time I've done 1 mile the noise has gone when I take-off.

I left it running whilst I washed it the other day - 30 mins ticking over before driving off.... no noise. Something isn't happy until it warms up!

Many thanks for any advice.
Mark.
Hi Mark

They told me at the stealers that my vin wasn't effected by this issue which is a load of BOLL@X cuz the NICE man at customer relations said I will sort it for you and he did for FREE :clap2: that was last month or so.
GOOD LOOK

I've already been talking with John Lake @ LR Head Office on the tel number listed above... so we're all being directed to the same person - I'm assuming this is the same 'John'.

The conversations started out quite defensive on Land Rover's behalf but the more I explained and demonstrated that I knew what I was talking about and the more I'd researched (through here) - the more helpful his tone is becoming. Having sent in 'research-links' along with a video showing my VIN / Reg & then underneath to show the old-style diff / coupling... I'm now awaiting his next response. I think I've done enough now - we'll see over the coming days.

One funny comment from John that Land Rover "Did Not Recognise Any Literature / Findings" from this or any other Forums... we are not in a position to offer an 'Expert Opinion'.

- as many of us on here have been loyal customers of Land Rover - through thick & thin... and as 'WE' are the people who live 'Daily' with their products... Land Rover should consider us as a valuable source of information about their 'products' ?
