To lift or not to lift ?

hi all , got. Disco 300 (v8) want to redo all springs and shocks, i would like to lift it 2" but appears to be a grey area , some people say you can slap it on there and wont ruin the car, others say makes everything wear faster, and that ruins drive at over 50mph, so i want to ask the experts , p.s. my insurance company have told me lifting it wont affect my premium

All Down to personal preference, what do you intend to use the truck for, if your planning on doing some lanes and possibly pay and play then go for the lift,

If you don't intend to get it dirty then I would stick with standard height, but you can still upgrade the suspension to a better make if you wanted,

2" is the most common lift, it dose take a little bit of getting use to it all depending how you drive.

Also to consider when lifting is extended brake lines not essential with a 2" lift but for piece of mind when off roading i would change them,

Another thing people do is remove the anti roll bars for better articulation, yes it effects the handeling again but you will soon get use to it,

Iv not noticed any major wear and tear because of the lift just keep an eye on your uj's and you will be fine

it seems that some do and some dont, i have had lifted and non lifted discos and to be honest i prefer the lifted ones but then mine is used primarily for off road or winter road driving and neither of these require going above 80kmh (around 50mph) so the stability issue is not a problem for me, sadly high speed stability and good clearance dont usually go together, ask yourself what will you use it for and then make the decision.

As for it affecting other components, i had as many problems with the non lifted as i do with the lifted ones but i think that is more down to the abuse mine takes on a regular basis, if you lift it and only use it on road then once the old components have been replaced i dont think that the lift will adversely affect the service life of parts that much but again Landies are not standard cars and they dont all behave the same way, each one is unique and seem to have a character of their own, is yours generally a good one or is it a bit of a dog? my current one is the latter but i still love the old dog

I do want to start taking it off road abit, but the truth is will be doing far more road driving , i drive up the a1 to college 2days a week about 80miles for both trips so has to be okay at 60/70mph , hmmmmm i dont know its a tricky one

what about a compromise and just fit new springs and shocks, you dont have to go the full 2" there are other kits out there, if its mainly a road vehicle then maybe a lift isnt the right thing to do, if its a cosmetic thing just try new tyres, bigger ones of course that will make it look a bit meatier or maybe wheel spacers i have them on mine and it really improves the stance, horses for courses buddy why make a good motor worse at what you want it to do.

Personally, I'd go sort wheels & slightly larger tyres 1st. That'll give you more clearance across the axle(Diff gets more clearance), whereas a lift will give you more between the axle's, and 2inches wading depth(snorkel would do the same). Disco's are better than you'd think off road, they can articulate fine and keep the wheels on the ground. It comes down to tyre grip more than anything else. Just my opinion though.

In that case unless your suspension is fooked is leave it as it is and save the money for fuel lol,

I'd go for a terrafirma standard height kit,

Are u running standard or bigger size tyres

265/75/16 is a common size on the diesels, not sure if there's any preference for the v8 for better mpg ???

I have given up caring about MPG , its **** any which way i look at it lol, its a auto if that makes any difference , i would like some more mpg but its not priority

Don't touch Terriblefirma with a barge pole. 50% of their suppliers say their springs are handed, 50% say they aren't!! Beggars belief!!

i do a lot of motorway in my disco but also a fair amount of pay and play.

replaced the shagged springs with HD standard height and it lifted it a good 2" more like 3 on the back. a pair of 110 rear shocks give 1" extra travel which isnt enough to dislocate the spring. also got 265/75/16 mud tyres and thats about the most i will do.

road handling is brill on the HD springs. tyres make a noticeable difference to the steering but thats inevitable. when at pay and plays i only get stuck cos of the tow bar. that might be your best option IMHO

right , decided im going to go for the mm4x4 lift kit, is it worth changing the turrets or just leaving them standard? should i get polybush for the shocks aswell? any advice would be much appreciated

I fitted a Terrafirma 2" lift kit to mine and they were definitely handed on the front. The springs were clearly marked "front drivers side" and "front passenger side". The rears weren't though.

The thing with larger tyres, is it always kills fuel consumption to some degree.
In that way, you would be paying "every time you went to the pumps"

A 50mm (2 inch) lift is perfect

I want to be able to take it off road abit aswell, the only problem i see with leaving it standard height is that it has got under slung lpg tanks so i want the 2" lift just to be sure
