You couldn’t wind a nyloc nut down a ball joint (taper shaft) without setting the taper first.

personally I think it’s about competence.

which is why I said "there are ways" to lock the taper before winding a nyloc on. Even before the days of hexes in the end of the threaded end.

Dunno what Disco you've got if indeed it is a Disco but on my Disco 2 my nearside rear shock top bolt started going round and round, I thort "It'll be OK". after 6 months in Frogland, got to channel port after hearing clunking noise, had a look, sho nuff the bolt had fellen oot.
So back in blighty fitted a longer bolt and then a lock nut on the end, flipping fiddly but it's been OK ever since.;)

I think we are talking different joints here.

Yes with regards to my rear shocks.
Ball joint with tapered cone you can wind a nylon lock nut with a impact gun and then torque it up.
You can also just wind it on with impact gun and don't bother to torque it up!
Factory would use a torque specific gun I imagine

Nope.

rubbish.

I love idea of actooly giving a poop about the cost of split pins as opposed to nuts!!! 🤣 🤣 🤣
So was it you or @kevstar who advocated the counting of the times used?
I'm getting befuddled!!;)

I have buckets of nylocks so I just chuck the old ones away any how I horse the up with my impact gun sod the recommended
torque on a rod end, I prefer split pins in mines.
Normally when fitting I thump the rodend into the hub then whizz them on with the gun it stops it spinning when you get
to the nylon. :)

Which bit is rubbish exactly?
You seem to agree with Kevstar when he mentions exactly the same about doing it up with an impact gun.
Not using a torque setting is a nod in the direction of people who don't.
Oh, I have just reread the post you mentioned about setting the taper.
Ok, ball joint in your hand and try and wind the nut on then it won't work.
Push the ball joint into the relevant hole, put the nylon lock nut on the thread then whizz it up with the impact gun and it will work.

In the past I have found that if you load the joint either with the weight of the vehicle or with clamps etc you can get the taper to grip to the point that you can tighten the nut..

Not everyone has a “whizz up“ impact gun so all I’ve ever done in the past before impact guns is a light hammer tap to lock the taper and then used a standard socket and ratchet then my torque wrench … job done.

I suppose if you own an impact gun you must find ways of using it or then its a waste of money😊

I use the trolley jack handle to lever the ball joint up into the taper and tighten the nut with a socket.

I int got no pooooofy impact gun.
Many ways to do the same job.
The point I was trying to make, as I am sure you all know, it really isn't a problem using a nylon lock nut on a ball joint.

Very good for its small size, I spend most of my time going around undoing nut and bolts just for the sake of it, very relaxing. I guess it would be even better if I bought a battery for it! 🤣
