I'd not pull it apart to clean it if it's working as there is an element of risk to it's integrity if you have never pulled one apart before. It ain't broke so don't fix is a good one to follow. This is why I said use cab cleaner. The gunge in the valve is only what the engine spits out the breather to be burnt anyway. As for what it does? It's basically a motor driven valve that allows an amount of air to bypass the throttle butterfly. This means the throttle butterfly can remain closed on things like over run which helps engine braking and emissions. The ECU is able to control idle speed vary accurately and quickly using a combination of iacv position and ignition advance.
I hope that explains it's function?

so where would be the best place to squirt the carb cleaner if its best not taking apart?

N68. Tx that's clear, we now know what it does. Sparky has the tick over problem and this gismo helps control tickover. So, Sparky, pull the rubber pipe off, no clip on mine so easy to do, and spray some WD40 down the pipe, then reconnect pipe - done

N68, does this cover it?

why WD40 and not carb cleaner?

and as im looking in the engine bay from the front of the car which side will the pipe to take of be on?

cheers

thanx :)

carb cleaner is solvent based i think, so it should get rid of crap

WD gets rid of moisture and is a mild lubricant

what have you used?

or anyone else?

Wd40 is more solvent than anything else so works well as a cleaner ;)
The slight oil content helps keep the iacv lubricated too.
So ether works really.

I know this is an old thread but I've been having the same problem and tried spraying WD40 down the pipe. Unfortunately my WD40 was nearly empty so tried some penetrating release spray (I think it's something similar) and it seems to have helped. I might still need to replace the idle control valve but was going to try cleaning it first but couldn't get the lower two screws out. Ive ordered these hoping they will fit. Anybody know if they are the job or is there another way to get those screws out?
