it's just the newer version of the engine management system, it replaced the one on mine (mems 1.9) by removing the dizzy and incorporating coil packs amongst other stuff.

The throttle cable will have nothing to do with idle speed or quality . Actual idle speed controlled by the ECU using data received from various sensors. The ECU drives the iacv to achieve the correct speed. The iacv can clog up with muck. It's easy to clean with a couple of squirts of carb cleaner or even some Wd40. There should be about 5 mm free play at the throttle pedal.

OK,if its an 02my it wont have a dizzy, you didnt state the age of the car in your original post.Same deal though where plugs and the two cyls which have leads are concerned.
If a visual check does not help then a code read of the engine ecu would help,I dont see much of petrol FL 1's now so I'm a bit rusty on them, from memory the engine ecu is Mems S3 2000. Any fault codes should be reasonably accurate if they are recent. But often live data displays give a much better idea of what is going on - or not as the case may be.I guess an OBD II code reader should be able to communicate with your car,I only use Testbook on these so you may need further advice of what will work properly on your car.

cheers for the info bud, i had a quick look under the spark plug cover but it started to rain:mad:
when its dry enough i'll do a better check

iv sorted throttle cable/pedal play there was a lot of slack on the cable:eek: also done reset thing

now then where would i find the "iacy" or is there any pics anywhere?

cheers

The iacv or Idle Air Control Valve is in the middle of this pic just above the oil filler cap. It gets it's air through the large pipe on it's right.

Does it need any attention?

If the technician had unlimited time to work on a car then it could be cleaned when the air filter is changed but as time is limited it doesn't get cleaned unless it messes about. I clean them yearly.

Mines not see a technician for servicing for at least 5 years and I've never looked at this - will have a look at the weekend!

All you need to do to clean the iacv is pull the large rubber pipe off the Throttle Body (TB). Start the engine and spray some carb cleaner or Wd40 into the pipe while it's idling. Rev the engine a couple of times as this actuates the iacv. Repete this a few times and you are sorted!!

Far better to remove from the car and clean it - you dont really want the engine eating all the gungy sh*te they collect in them.

get some pics up when ya do it bud.

did'nt get time to have a go at mine as i had to take wor lass for her chemo

Well, peered at it for a bit. wriggled the pipe to check that was OK, then reverted to aint broke, so don't fix and shut the bonnet. It is located on the front of the throttle body - as per pic earlier in this thread. tbh I'm not sure what it does?

I'd not pull it apart to clean it if it's working as there is an element of risk to it's integrity if you have never pulled one apart before. It ain't broke so don't fix is a good one to follow. This is why I said use cab cleaner. The gunge in the valve is only what the engine spits out the breather to be burnt anyway. As for what it does? It's basically a motor driven valve that allows an amount of air to bypass the throttle butterfly. This means the throttle butterfly can remain closed on things like over run which helps engine braking and emissions. The ECU is able to control idle speed vary accurately and quickly using a combination of iacv position and ignition advance.
I hope that explains it's function?
