Just a general enquiry to my fellow members. I use a 20W/50 mineral engine oil in my vehicle and it has around 145,000 miles on the clock and runs on LPG. Generally I use about a litre of oil every 1000 miles but if driven enthusistically the old girl uses alot more, probably twice what she would normally. Has anyone else noticed this?

No that isn't right the RV8 will leak oil however it shouldn't burn it..

Any blue smoke out of the exhaust under hard acceleration, or at any time?

And finally what brand of 20w50 mineral are you running?

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
If I accelerate very hard, at traffic lights for example, I can see smoke in the rear view mirror albeit briefly.
I am currently using a Comma oil, X-flow Type SP 20W-50.

Piston rings or valve guides are worn, rings can be checked with a compression tester if readings are low squirt a bit of oil in and test again if better results rings worn, if all good on compression test then valve guides unless its a blocked engine breather do you get any pressure out of the rocker cover oil filler

Compression is good on all cylinders. There is no pressure out of oil filler.

If valve seals were leaking, you'd get a puff of smoke on initial start up, but then clear up quickly with no smoke on acceleration or idle

Mine used to drink it, very little smoke, bit of blue on start up but non when you would expect it, was running lpg

There doesn't seem to be any blowby. Valve stem oil seals were replaced 2 or 3000 miles ago. Valve stem oil seals don't have to bed in do they?
No they don't however it is possible they have failed again, try leaving her to idle for 10 minutes then boot the throttle if you get a haze of blue smoke then it is probably those that are to blame..

The level of smoke is another way to tell whether it is rings or stem seals, the former will always produce far more smoke at all times, a faint haze will even be apparent when idling..

Just out of interest what was your driving style, and did you ever find out the reason?

Mostly drove like miss Daisy but with the odd hooligan moment because I liked the noise, Motor was on 140k, I put 20w 50 oil in which was better, didn't use as much as the thin stuff, recon it was just wear in the bores and head, no service history and the oil was like treacle when I bought it with filters clogged as well

No leaks visible? Thinking crank seal and front timing cover.
That is worth exploring because I asked local garage to check it for blue smoke this morning and they said that there was no sign of any smoke at all. I imagine that the crank seal and front timing cover would only leak when engine running which is why I have no oil on the drive?
