ok this is one that iam stuck. i have a freelander 1998 2l diesel and first of all i changed the timing belt and pulleys started it up first turn of the key she started :) spot on. next i changed the pump belt locked everthing in position changed belt and ten and now she wont start arrrhhh so my question is if i have the crank locked and the pump locked how the f**ck can the timing be out and more to the point how can i go about fixing it lol

update i have got the freelander running it runs fine when it was cold exept it took a decade to start it but it wont start when engine is hot and when it does it wont rev and smokes really badly (white smoke). i hand turned the engine and the timing marks line up so iam not sure if its a timing prob but it only happenend once ive changed the pump belt. please can anyone help as right now iam in a deep tunnel and can see no light

Hi, when you locked the crank and the FIP, was the timing pin/drill bit a sliding fit on the FIP? The timing tool must be able to slide easily in the timing hole, if it doesnt then the timing is out. The correct belt fitment method includes loosening the cam pulley bolts and applying a counter-clockwise torque of 25nm to the pulley before re-tightening the bolts.

I would first lock the flywheel again and check the FIP timing pin is a sliding fit.
regards,

regards,

i used a tight fitting drill bit on the FIP so it was quite a tight fit but did move 1-2mm side to side and torqued the bolts. do you think that it sounds like timing and that liitle out can cause a non start thanks in advance:)

Yeah definetly, these can engines can be really sensitive to timing, had to setup timing twice on a rover sdi (Lseries) before it would run.
I would start again, lock the crank and follow the correct fitting procedure for fitting the FIP belt, applying correct torque to tensioner and A/CW torque to the cam pulley. The cam pulley is designed to take up the couple of degrees difference in the belt and tensioner. When I pin my FIP there is no movement 'side to side' it is an 'engineering fit', perfectly sliding in. If the engine was running correctly pre-belt change then it will be a timing issue.
Have you got a haynes or rave manual to follow?

ye i both haynes and rave to follow it was running fine when i fitted the timing belt i started it up first turn of the key but only for 10 secs or so then switched of and started on the fip belt (wish i hadnt now) and been at it for a day now ill try today to pin the fip better as maybe iam using to big a drill bit and its not sitting in right ill post back later and thanks again

ive not had anybody today to help so i cant fit the pin in to check timing. what i have done today is started it up which took a while of turning and turning but once running it ran nice at 900rpm and not a lot of smoke from exhaust so ran it down road and got it up to temp stoped it and left it for 5-10 mins and tryed to start it again and no way would it start plus loads of smoke out the exhaust (unburnt diesel i think) what other thing could it be if it was not timing as it seems to be it will not start atol when engine is hot or does this behavier happen when timing is out? just trying to maybe check something else till i can get someone here to turn the crank for me

Hi again,
from your symptons (smoke from exhaust hard to start), id still say that it is timing related, especially as it has only ocurred post FIP belt change. There appears to be loads of fuel being introduced to the cylinders, just need to get it injected at the right time!
Clutching at straws, check all your electrical connectors, but esssentially as long as you have compression and fuel is injected at precisley the correct time then it should go bang. Glow plugs assist this on startup but your engine was running well previously so we can discount this from the fault finding.
Hope you can get hold of a helper and you nail this soon, just take comfort that once sorted youve got it sorted you have the best hippo engine availible! (In my opinion!);)

i should get someone tomorrow to help and i really hope this is whats wrong as ive been at it for a day now lol and at the end of the teather ive checked the connectors and they all seem to be fitted i was just worried that it started when cold and run ok but when hot it never ran atol that it might be something other than timing. once again thankyou very much den on your input on this matter :)

ok got somebody today and done the timing so it is pretty much spot on started it (took a 7-8 turns) and it ran great. got it up to temp switch off and left it 10 mins then it started first turn of the key :) switch of and left it all afternoon and tryed starting it and once again took 7-8 turns to start so it has improved no end but i think it still needs a little tweeking some were as it does smoke a little and you can here a slight diesel knock from the engine unless this is just the l series engine (not sure as ive not had one before) but improvement is no end so there is light at the end of the tunnel lol

Glad it all seems to be getting there, have a little tweek with the timing, put some injector cleaner in and give it a good run.
Also if you got time before you fill the tank, give the tank sender a quick clean, quick job only took me 20 mins all in, and it was full of muck! Has helped my starting and running!
Well done on sorting the timing!

i was going to do all the cleaning stuff tomorrow and thanks for all your help its not 100 percent but its getting there how will i tweek the timing as not to keen on taking the belt off again lol

The timing can be tweeked by marking where the bolts are on the cam pulley slots, loosening them and manually advancing or retarding! gently does it!
Have heard people go on about the hammer mod (tapping top of FIP side to side) but doesnt sound too good to me!
I believe that 'testbook' can provide timing clues too when it comes to fine tuning the timing.

sorry for the late reply ive been away for a couple days ye iam going to do this tank clean at the weekend as ive heard quite a lot of people on about it what is testbook? thanks again
