Hi.....my Hippo has done 122k and is running great... however, it runs at a mega low temperature..... on the motorway in reasonably cold air the guage never gets off the cold zone.....it is just a fraction off stop. In summer it is better but only just past cold zone. It only ever gets up to temperature in heavy stop start traffic.

Question..... I know these cars run cold...but this cold!!!...where does your TD4 temp guage reside after a 20 mile run????? The guage indication...seems to be right as the heater is virtually useless...until FBH cuts in.

I am thiniking if I changed the stat ..... it would make the car more economincal.....what are the crew's views.

The FL temp gauges are not very accurate at all - mine reads vertical (pointing to 12 o' clock) at anything from 60 to 85C.

My Scangauge usually reads 78 - 80C

Yes the M47Rs run cold in winter especially - the Rover 75 and MG ZT boys go so far as fit a different 'stat to get the temp up to 90 or 92.

I wouldn't want it that hot as I often run to S Europe.

Is the heater giving out hot air - as if the temp gauge is correct - it wont.

If you do get enough heat from the heater - then the gauge is Kaput.

I would find a way to get an accurate water temp reading.

mine runs smack in the middle I did change the water pump and the thermastat houseing as well as anew thermastat hell of a job i had to undo the engin mounts drop the engin to do the bottom bolts and jack up the engin to do the top bolts thermastat is still a nastie job you just can not get you hand down but given time it can be done

Wow - I didn't think that changing the 'stat was such a pig of a job - had a look in the Hayne's Bible and you're dead right, of course. :(

I don't want to be doing that - what mileage did the pump fail at? ;)

Changed two water pumps now on my TD4, one at about 90k, second one about 140k, the first time I used a "cheap" pump... Got a better one the second time around!
Pig of a job! But you don't have to remove half the bits that RAVE says you have too!!

My heater is really cold.......the only releaf I get is when fbh cuts in. I recon my stat must be wide open.......teddywood ....how quickly does your engine take to heat up?
also what is your mpg??? I know stat is a barstweard...I have been warned...ulp.
 
Mine did this back in about October and I changed just the `stat. It now sits bang on the halfway point. It definitely runs quieter now, but not necessarily more economically. It's definitely warmer now though!

Do a search for my previous posts around October-ish. After I changed my `stat I loosely wrote up what I'd done to change it. It really IS quite an unpleasant job, but it can be done easier than Haynes or RAVE tell you, as CJK sez.

my stat is the same, the engine was not gettting warm and the gauge barely above cold. I looked at changing the stat and realised it was a difficult job and did not fancy doing it in the cold weather so i just taped the lower grill up with duct tape. It now runs in the middle of the gauge and heater nice and warm. Will do the stat when it gets warmer.
