thermostat bolt stripped

Recently purchases a series 3 2.25 Diesel (1977) and when cleaning up the engine bay the leak from the thermostat was because one of the bolts has stripped... has any one used loctite thread repair or will i have to re thread...(have tried to rethread the same size but the bolt still pulls..don't really want to go a size up if i ccan help it

thanks i have tried re threading but did not work... i will need to go up in size and i am concerned re drilling the thermostat housing

if its which it should be an imperial thread though many have been swapped to metric heads or engines its a 1/4 unf and a recoil kit of the same is the best repair loctite will never do

Helicoil is the cure :cool: Saved my axle casing on mine. If your not aware, All you do is oversize the hole then screw an insert in with the bits supplied in kit. That insert then locks in place and you can put the original sized bolt back in. It is your best bet for sure!

On my old disco1 I had same thing, thermostat housing bolt popped out, waited for it cool completely and used Araldite as temporary fix for 10 years with no problems.
I do miss that tdi sometimes
