The Limits of my Landrover

Today was an interesting day today and it raised a question.

What are the limits of my Landrover Disco, Its a 2001 Discovery 2 Td5
110,500 miles, well serviced and running road tyres, i'll check what they are if it helps. It is entirely standard but suprised me.

We went out looking for roads of varying conditions, and we came accross a couple of by ways and with your everyday pot holes and 1 foot of water and frozen ice. Some very steep inclines and declines and quite a lot of ice and snow resulting in slides ect.

It was fully loaded with 4 of us and food and tools ready for a disaster and a walk home, including the boys sleigh.

I used low range for a very steep incline, where no car had driven before as the snow was fresh and untouched. It drove up without batting an eye lid and the TC didn't even flicker on once over the 100 meter hill.

We Also did the by way in both directions with a little controlled sliding down hill, large drops and 1 1/2 foot snow using the additional height from the air suspension just incase. It never faultered and only used TC a couple times going back up the run.

Don't get me wrong i wasn't daft and going for 3 ft snow drifts etc, we took a thought out route through each obstacle but i wondered how much more it can do in standard trim.

I really am impressed with what it managed to do in stock trim but i want to work out what is the first limitation i am likely to experience with it on a green lane or salsbury plain runs when i join in some this year ?

mine is standard and with the plough on back road tyres. Joined Lz on plains yeah the noob group it was a great day and a good insite into green laning. Only thing that i did wrong and was lucky with was followed series into one of the water troughs if it was an inch higher i would o been up a creek with out an engine. Great day out
 
Are there any partiuclar tyres that are suitable off road but not to terrible for road. I know there is always a compromise.

I do motorbikes ussually,

I run race for race, commuter for commuter, off road for off road.

BUT..

We can get MST tyres as well other varients..
Including dual compound hard centre soft outer edges for grip and mileage..

I am assuming that some manufacturer provides something as a happy medium, but off road biased. Unfortunatley for me i have to drive it from clevedon to where ever i wanna play and don't fancy ruining exspensive off road dedicated tyres on a motorway run... trailer being no option for me. ;)

And don't wink... i'm cornish i might take it as affection :eek:

If you know how to drive correctly 'off road' then you do not require any 'special' tyres. I have standard road going 205/r16s on my defender, never been stuck once and very rarely have I locked my central diff.
Dont get big tyres, just learn to drive:p
 
Your down hill slides can be prevented with low range and sit on the gear. Will just guide you down nice and safe. Went down great Malvern high st. Which is 1:1 with 3 inches of snow like that. And I don't have traction control.

wanna prove you're point? I'll quite happily take you on a few local lanes to me and we'll see you're "driving skill" on standard road tyres getting you through the lanes.

Hahaha, easy mate, Ill take you up on your challenge. If you can drive properly you don't need fancy tyres its simple, maybe you should also learn to drive. Maybe go on a course with the institute of advanced drivers. Ever noticed the AA special recovery Land Rovers have standard tyres? Why? Because those lot also know ho to drive:your_wrong:

I have to admit to not using low range, i just used 1st gear as it seemed alright at the time.. but looking back i should have tried it.. Infact the misses might be the better driver as she suggested it.
