OK... have now got a lovely tapping sound coming from what seems to be the gearbox to add to my abnormally loud fuel pump (working on sorting that out)!! A little distressing as its disturbing my enjoyment of hearing the thud of insects hitting the windscreen on these beautiful summer days or the sound of the portable hurricane force winds that appear from nowhere as I approach 50MPH!!

Any ideas?... clutch, flywheel, the whole gearbox or something else? the tapping is present in all gears (but louder in some), doesn't really disappear when dipping the clutch, but changes gears OK (can be temperamental after driving for a while and might need a little nudge, but hey its a defender!).

Its a 2000 TD5 so has an R380 and has only done 90K... yes I know I could have a professional come out and look at it, but I thought I'd ask those who understand these fine machines first, before watching somebody breath sharply through their teeth, rub their chin and mutter the words "it gonna cost ya"

Thanks as always ;)

Engine speed... when sat at lights in 1st it just a low tapping and then as you pull off and increase speed becomes more noticeable and constant

Ok has there been any other unusual noises. Even if brief?
Bearings usually whine or grumble, a uj wouldn't tap. If it was a damaged gear on your output somewhere, it would be rather frantic. Some damage on the intermediate shaft?
I'm not really sure without a good listen! Someone else might have a better idea

If there's no noise in neutral but there is with the clutch depressed and the gearbox in gear I would begin wondering about something towards the engine end of the drivetrain. For example a lot of my funny noises disappeared with the installation of a new dual mass flywheel. Moans and groans at low speed on a damp morning, especially with the clutch down, a tinny rattle at high speed and various other things were cured. On dismantling it was apparent that the dual mass flywheel was very loose and rattly. I'm not saying it's that, but if you're contemplating taking the gearbox off, it's relatively easy to check, before you actually start taking the gearbox apart.

Thanks... definitely something to look at.

Dmf can cause what you are describing

That's where my thinking is heading... I think for peace of mind it might be worth fitting a new clutch & DMF, inspect the rest and hopefully not find anything else!! Can anybody suggest somebody decent around Surrey/ Kent areas who could do this and not rip me off in the process?

If your running a tuned td5 consider a lof clutch and a luk dmf
