Driving to work this morning.

Wipers were on.

I smell smoke. Someone's got their fire on early.

Oh **** the landys on fire.

Wiper motor burnt out. There wereflames and smoke.

Sacraficed my coffee for the landy to put out the flames.

Need to look into that - I guess the fuse must be wrong at the least.

Having a mare of a weekend with cars.

Fire on Friday

Camper alternator packed in on Sunday - sounds like it's thrown a bearing or dropped a brush.

So landys not had even an investigation as to the damage. :(

Well well Ted

After getting a chance to open the dash and see the damage

Turns out it was the earth wire from the heated screen had melted and burnt out

Now that's odd because it's a designed system from red bison and fused as supplied at the battery

Might the wire have been damaged and so could not carry the current effectively?

What size wire and fuse are they? Just because the wire is fused, doesn’t mean the wire size is correct for the fuse that’s fitted.

agreed , and its something ill be looking into for sure, cant be having this.
I suspect you may be right that its got damaged where it passes behind the dash in the shroud that the wiper rack goes through .

Scorch marks suggest its arc'd right by the earth point and the wire is melted around there.

If it is the earth wire, it can’t “arc” onto the body/chassis as the earth should be 0v, and so should the chassis. If it is the earth, and it has arced, then it shows an underlying earth issue.

Where does that earth wire connect to? The screen and....?

not really - if you have something that is making connection periodically and pulling away it will arc regardless - in any circuit.

its connected to negative of the screen and the earth point on the bulkhead.

In a DC circuit a circuit measures the voltage the length of the wire from the positive to the negative terminal of the battery there is no 0 volt line.

The arcing shouldn’t happen. Arcing will only happen when there is a voltage difference, and therefore current flow. The only way your earth wire can have arced is if the other end of it was “floating” or didn’t have a good connection to earth.

If you have a load connected from the positive to the earth, current will flow, the amount of current is inversely proportional to the resistance.

Your screen will have 12v on one side, a resistance of around 0.3ohm, and around 40A flowing through it. If you measure voltage at the positive side, from the battery neg terminal, you will get 12v, measure at the “earth” end and it will be 0v.
