Terrafirma RTC steering damper

Mrs Cowasaki has bought me one for Christmas and given me it early. Just reading the instructions and it says fit washer then Spring then lock washer then 1st rubber then 2nd rubber then 2nd lock washer then lock nut then assemble Spring retainer and fit......

But there are three lock washers...........

Anybody fitted one before, should there be a spare?

I would dump it tbh... mine failed after 2 years....

I doubt it as on that video it doesn't even have a washer.....

By "lock washer" it is referring to the curved washers that go between the poly bush and the bracket.

I've also bought a full poly bush kit and I'm even more confused by that as only some of the bags are labelled!!

Now to work out what all the bags in my DC7010 bush kit are for!

I'll let you know what it's like. I have quite a few bits waiting to go on at the moment but have been suffering from constant rain so most are still waiting.... I've got A frame bearing, complete poly-bush kit, valve clearances, oil change, driver seat belt, steering damper and possibly more. Could do them all in about 3 days if I had good weather. I'm off for 6 weeks now so hopefully I'll get chance.

Nice one, it will be a few months yet anyway before i get mine back on the road as i have 8 more weeks left to wait for my new Richards chassis to arrive

I'm still waiting for a day without rain to do my A frame bushes and ball joint....... Want to do all the bushes, A frame ball joint and RTC damper then service it whilst I'm off. Let us know how it goes. My spring isn't cut very well and will not actually go into the aluminium bracket without modification!

Ive fitted these to all my 110s and it made it more pleasurable to drive. Obviously shouldnt use to try and solve instability issues (as that means you have a problem elsewhere) but i did find it more relaxing to drive along country lanes.

Yeah getting the spring onto the aluminium casting can be a bit of a bitch. I lubed mine up with some coppaslip which helped.

Yes, I like these too. I fitted one three and a half years ago and the self centring tendency is much better than with the previous damper, so well worth doing in my opinion.

I'll fit it whilst doing all the front bushes. Next job is the A frame bushes and ball joint then other rear bushes.

I will have a look see if the spring will go in the cup at the weekend, with my old unit when i came to removing it i expected it to slowly expand like a shocker does but it didn't so i pressume its nacked.

No, it doesn't mean it's broken. Unless the external spring is fastened to the body of the damper with that aluminium block, the damper will stay put at whatever position you put it in. Just as well too. Imagine a damper that was continually trying to push you into the oncoming traffic. Once it's in position you can wind the spring onto the groove in the aluminium thingy and clamp it to the body of the damper with the wheels in the straight ahead position and the spring will give you a self centering action.

The spring will not wind onto the aluminium thing on mine. I think that the end of the spring is not quite at the right angle. I've e mailed them but not had an answer yet. At least I got job1 done, my A frame ball joint and bushes today....... Had to virtually do the job twice as I fitted the left and right arms on the wrong side and so had to remove the exhaust etc twice.... Still it's on now............ bugger, just realised that I haven't tie wrapped my rear axle breather back in place at the back. I'll have to do that just as I leave later. Having a press to press out the ball joint and bushes made the job easier.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure it will go together eventually. I think I put the aluminium bits inside the spring and then forced the damper through the hole in the middle. But that was three years ago so I couldn't swear to it.

I'll have a look at that. I'm hoping for good weather tomorrow so may well get both the radius arms, panhard rod and steering damper done plus the rear arms. That'll take care of the chassis bushes. It's a shame I can't take them all off at once and take them down to the local Landrover repairer who is happy to let me use his press. It made light work of the A frame bushes today.
