Am considering an upgarde to a TD5,as the 300 tdi needs sills/inner wings,x membe & clutch.
Any major 'faults' other than oil in loom:confused:

Looking at 1999 models (seem reasonably priced now)

I thought there was room for changes in the autumn statement. Wishful thinking i know, but if they think they will loose millions of votes they might just make another u-turn

Well they are politicians. So I suppose they can change things to suit themselves as and when they please. But as it stands at present the tax hike will come into force as it stands. There was talk of a legal challenge. As retrospective laws are an infringement of the Human Rights legislation. I doubt anything will come of it though.

I've got a '99 TD5 auto, on 115 000 miles. Problems so far:

The sunroofs and alpines leak.
Head gasket replaced under warranty.
Head replaced since then (cracked). Stupid bl***y LR agent hadn't replaced the plastic dowels with metal, which probably didn't help.
ACE failed. Expensive, as the driver thought it would be OK to drive on. LR agent had two goes at repairing it.
New rad fitted.
New rear hub.
Electronics play up occasionally but have always reset themselves so far.
Coil springs, so no airbag problems.
EGR seized.
Engine goes much better since I ditched the Agent and went to an Indie.
Back door handle seized (same old disco problem).
Beautiful to drive. Sooo much nicer than TDis, but costs more to repair.
Oh, and they don't like SVO.:)

Other than EGR,ACE,electronics; have replaced, repaired all the other items on my 300tdi.
So think I will take the plunge.
Is ACE best avoided?

IMO,ACE is one of the good features of my Td5,handeling on the road is realy good,it's height adjustable for off road and self leveling when carrying loads or pulling trailers.
Cost of parts isnt such a big issue if you dont source from main dealers,I use Paddocks.
Thats my two peneth, for what its worth.
Marc.

ACE certainly improves handling and cornering. The adjustable height stuff relates to air suspension - so not all TD5s have it. ACE is basically similar to the power steering setup, and linked in to it, so it can get the same problems. IF it dies (red light and warning buzz) then you must stop immediately and get recovered, otherwise it can contaminate the whole ACE/power steering system, which costs. I would avoid it if you're contemplating things like long safari journeys. It's probably worth having in the UK though. Mine burst a pipe going round roundabouts too fast, apparently.

They are definately going ahead with it it has been written in the legislation. But it only applies to vehicles registered post 2001 so a 1999 TD5 won't jump to the top rate tax band.

I have heard that it can be back dated as long is they have the emissions data for the vehicle (300 are ok but TD5's are not). The info came from a MOT tester. Phew I am just glad I have spent my money on a 300.

The Guardian reckons there will be another u-turn - just that the time is not yet right. I haven't heard of the possible backdating for TD5s before - I suspect that's just a rumour, or might even be a weird footnote relating to older imported vehicles first registered after the date. To be honest, it don't seem that much anyway compared with the cost of keeping a TD5 on the road and in tiptop nick!

Vehicles registered after the relevant date have the CO2 details entered on the V5C log book. Vehicles registered before that date don't have that info on the V5C (well my TD5 doesn't) so it seems unlikelythat DVLA has that information, which means they can't use it to tax you.:D

Back to thread, I had two tdis and now have a 01 td5 auto ES. The new one does everything the old one did (except difflock, but I know I can add that back on if I really want), but the new one is so much better for everyday driving. I have done 10k in six months (it is now on 41k) and no problems, except a coolant pipe and power steering pipe burst (reckon both had perished as it had stood for a fair while before I got it).

I have just got rid of my 300 and bought a 2001 TD5 about a month ago, and never looked back, new car is fantastic, fast (compared to 300) quiet, more comfortable and with the ace pack on it handles suprisingly well.

I bought a TD5 after having two 300 TDI's. It's been the best move I've made - smoother, faster, quieter, more comfortable and better MPG. The tax is is bit of a worry but then again it means the price will come down even more - including the book price of the Discovery 3 - which is allegedly the best yet.

cheers.

Well i bought a 04 Td5 Landmark auto last year £19000 from main stealer.
Tax no problem as i get disabled but can't afford to run it as most of my journeys are local and most of the time it does'nt get out of 2nd gear so it will have to go. I might get another 300Tdi manual or a manual Td5 as i love the car and now iam driving a fiesta

int it odd how some adults have no idea about the use of their money

where's the logic in being able to buy a £19K landy then then not being able to afford to run it ?
