Landy has a TD5 injun in her and is one of the first ( 1999 )

So what to look out for folks?

Any mods that can be done?

From what i know, she has a good Service History with HG replaced 18 months ago ( hopefully with upgraded locating dowels ) discs and pads all done with original parts.

Heard some horror stories of the D2 but it seemed to be linked to the vehicle rather than the actual engine.

check the ECU plug (red one) for oil (under drivers seat ;))
would change all the oils/filters as a matter of course start as you mean to go on.
if you know anyone with a nanacom get um to run it on yours to check for faults ;)
oh and
enjoy!:D

Silicon hoses
Dump the EGR
straight through pipe to replace middle box
Clean the MAP sensor on the inlet manifold
I dropped the sump on both of mine to change the bolt with lock tight that holds the oil pump sprocket on, both were ok and tight but gives you piece of mind !
Get a later ecu with a "flash memory" so that you can get a stage one tune.

Great motor, had a few even Disco 2's and never had any problems :)

As above, all the preventative maintenance stuff like the injector loom, check for faults, change oil and filters every every 5-6K

Get rid of the EGR straight away and then clean the MAP sensor. Shouldn't really need cleaning thereafter or at least not for a very long time with the EGR gone.

Silicone hoses are a nice touch but unless your original hoses are deteriorating on the inside, they wouldn't be the top of my list of things to do.

Fit a de-cat pipe and center box replacement pipe. These two are possibly the cheapest and best value for money in terms of getting a noticeable gain from a TD5... It releases abit of power and helps pickup a good bit but suppose the biggest difference is the awesome noise :)

Could leave it at that and just get a re-map then and you'll have a good 150bhp and maybe 350-400Nm.

Next job on the cards for me would be a full-size intercooler and then a re-map to suit. That'll give you around 200bhp and it'll really pull hard.

If your borderline insane or an idiot thinking you'd Defender is a race car, a VNT turbo and other bits like building a 2.7 TD5 for 250bhp+ and upwards of 500Nm is possible.

You'll need stronger half shafts, cv-joints, probably uprated clutch and other things too if you go as far as the VNT turbo stuff.

Mine has Silicone hoses, Performance intercooler, EGR delete, center box and cat dumped with a re-map. VNT turbo, Alisport exhaust manifold and boost limit box to be fitted soon and all re-mapped again :)

Should be fun motoring over the winter :D

Sounds lovely :)

What have you done about the outlet manifold ? Ground webs out ? new studs ?

Getting an Alisport one. Two original ones have warped on me already and even after cutting the webs out and new studs.

As well as it being fairly tuned, I do a fair bit of heavy towing around the farm with moving livestock and things and then trips to trackdays with the car so 50-60mph for upto 3-400mile round trips combined with the extra load from the taller gearing with 33s and Disco transfer is probably too much for the standard casting.

The Alisport one is expensive enough as parts for landys go but at least I shouldn't have any more problems with it.

Bloody thing goes like a rocket compared to my 200Tdi!

Engine in original condition too, will look into kits etc

Cruised home from Hereford @85 :D
