2011 on sw's were reclassified as n1 , so will be £220 same as a hard top. I think it was something to do with changing the load carrying capacity

I have just done a search on this site: https://www.gov.uk/calculate-vehicle-tax-rates
for an August 2011 Defender 90 station wagon and it shows the following:

Vehicle
LAND ROVER Defender Station Wagon 2.4 90 2010 Model Year, M6
12 month cost
£490.00
6 month cost
£269.50
Date of first registration
8/2011
Tax band
M
Engine capacity (cc)
2402
Transmission
Manual
Fuel type
Diesel
CO2
266
Euro standard
4
Tax class
49

So if they are now only £220, it must have changed after August 2011 and if that's the case then it will be the first case ever of car tax reducing on a vehicle type.

Just seems so out of character for a government to do this. So worst off are SW owners with vehicles registered between 2006 - 2011, that are paying £490 - ouch.

As seem to remember that there was some discussions between land rover and the declare at the time. Although nothing came of it

As regards all the links etc all I can say is if you own a 2011 onward one , when you get your vehicle tax reminder through it will say £220

It does seem unfair although I would imagine its reflected in the purchase price of the effected vehicles . I personally wouldn't have one though.

It's not the government, it's how Land Rover classed their own vehicles. I may be wrong on this but I think by classifying them as commercials rather than M1 vehicles, it was a way around various pieces of legislation that cover passenger vehicles that the Defender couldn't hope to meet in its current form. Thats what I was told by a mate that works at a franchised dealers anyway.

would that not be the Puma models and that is increasing in value of TD5. Lets see if we can get a Puma owner to say what they pay. There are a few on here who have a puma.

Got ya. I think the £490 tax is when it was based on emissions, which covers some Td5's and some Pumas. Mines an early Td5 so it doesn't come into that bracket (thankfully).
