TD5's are great, they wouldnt be as worth the same as other defenders if they weren't. The market for them would have died.

In the prices section in the back of lro magazine a 2007 td5 90 hardtop in perfect condition is worth £18000 , where as an equivalent 2011 puma is only worth £16750.

Yup, a quick look at Ebay and Autotrader tell the same story. A late model, low mileage TD5 in good condition is clearly very collectible and commands a higher price than similar Pumas. They're getting to be like the Rolls Royces of the second hand Land Rover world. Whether people actually get the fancy prices they're asking is another story, of course. But it bodes well for those of us who've managed to snap one up.

People are realising that there is little to be frightened of. Ok a cracked cylinder head is no laughing matter but its fairly rare and mainly effects earlier engines.
The rest i.e. oil in the ecu etc is easy to sort .

It's only the engine that's different anyway , the rest is not much different to a 200/300 tdi

2002 TD5 has the new head design, 1999 -2001 have the old one(style) which in time will go bad and need to be replaced

Interesting, I must have the most desirable model then. 2005 90 CSW. Last year before the road tax doubles to over £400. I didn't think they still made TD5 models in 2007, as mentioned above?

Last model year was 2006 but could be plated as a 2007

It's for station wagons from around 2006 I believe, at £490. Vans are still much lower at £220. The tax for my 2005 90 CSW was £245 at last renewal. There is one reason why TD5's are worth more than puma's.

It changed again (either in 2009 or 2010 I think, not 100% sure) when all Defenders were reclassified as N1 vehicles and road tax dropped to around £200.

Edited to add: this isn't retrospective, if your tax was £400+, it still would remain at that. The reclassification only applied to new vehicles.

That's rubbish. Station wagons are still at £490 according to the government car data site: Select a search : Directgov - Car fuel data, CO2 and vehicle tax tools

Not rubbish at all. In summary if registered before March 2001 you pay £260 per year, after that date you pay £460 per year. This is for ALL Defenders registered as M1 class. 2011 model year Defenders are all classified as N1 (LGV) rather than M1. If they are under 3500kg revenue weight you pay £210 per year. If the SW is registered as M1 your right, if it's registered as N1 however then it's a commercial and you pay less road tax.

Estates and SW's are currently £490 and have been since 2006 - less annual increases.
Vans and pickups are currently £220. Go and check the link I posted. If you can find an estate registered after 2006 that only costs £220, I would be pleased to know about it

If they're classed as M1 (are you searching under the car category?). Since 2011 ALL Defenders are classed as N1, commercial vehicles. Do a search and see what people who actually own them are paying. Here's a good place to start since most have Pumas on there. Defender2 - Index

There's no argument here, cars (Defender sw's)) pay £490 now if first registered from 2006 onwards, all commercials which include vans and pickups, pay £220 now. It's your statement, that all Defenders since 2011, are classed as commercials, that is misleading.

Have you actually looked at what people are paying? Here's some links that spell it.

If you can find anyone with a post 2011 paying £460 then post it up.

Edited to add: Go on the DVLA site for tax and add the reg # for a post 2011 Defender SW (grab one off Google images) and see what the tax comes up as.

Put the reg of a post 2011 Sw either 90 or 110 in to the DVLA site I posted and see what it comes up with as the road tax due. £220 .

There must be some fraud going on then, if you go to the government site I posted earlier, where you can search for a car model rather than a reg.no., then all SW's from 2006 onwards are taxed at £490. Any SW only paying £220, must have originally been a commercial and converted, without advising DVLA.
