TD5 will not start

Ok - here goes my tale of woe.
99 Defender 90 TD5 - only had it 4 weeks , 2 off which I was on holiday so was not used.

Driving fine yesterday until engine cut out approaching a roundabout.
Engine restarted immediately and drove ok 20 miles to work.
Similar event coming home but this time the engine would not start.
Engine cranked over fine but temperature gauge went straight into red (engine was not hot)
RAC called - checked relays, fuses under seat etc . Inertia switch ok. Fuel pump working . OBD showed no faults. Tried different ground, unplugging ECU etc. Temperature gauge came back to normal. No warning lights on dashboard. In the end got it relayed home.

Today have replaced both relays under seat. Replaced CPS. Pulled hose from fuel cooler and checked fuel flowing ECU plugs look dry - harness was supposed to have been replaced recently. Rechecked inertia switch, run new earth to ECU etc
Spraying with Eezistart engine sounds like it wants to run but without it no sign of catching.
Has a Sterling immobiliser system but looks like that disables the starter. Assume it may also disable the ECU ?

Leaning towards fubarred ECU - have I missed anything ?

Ok - Got it !
Check pin 33 black connector for power ?

Will check this in the morning - fed up with it now.

Ok - 12V present on pin 33.
From what I can see only the Ecu, CPS or fuel pump would stop the engine from firing.
Any other suggestions where to look ??
 
Start with the valves in the fuel filter head, then in tank fuel pump, cut a hole in boot floor to get at it as dropping the tank is a right bitch and you might bust one of the pipes.

TD5's like a lot of other diesels are a right bastid to start once you have air in the system. Mine needs cranking for at least 30 seconds until it will fire I then give it some gaz whilst still cranking and it slowly comes to life !

Have plenty of fuel flowing from cooler so don't think it's a fuel delivery issue.
From manual fuel flows to regulator and then returns via cooler - unless regulator is 100% faulty can't see why engine won't run unless injectors not opening.
Be happy just to get it spluttering at this stage.
 
you say injector harness was replaced recently, it may be worth removing the rocker cover and checking the electrical connectors to the injectors are firmly in place

Not saying it is the pump but I messed around like you for two days and I also was getting diesel to the injectors but it's a high pressure system and if the pressure is'nt there it's not going to work !

Some wiv bad pumps complain of lack of power, mis-fires and all sorts of strange things etc.. Mine was making a pump noise but would'nt even fire.......... once !
 
Yup - but only from word of mouth from seller.
Connector plugs to Ecu are clean.
Have removed rocker cover, checked timing chain etc.
Pulled plugs to injectors

Main concern is the engine was running fine but then cut out and since that point in time has not sounded like it will start. Cranks well but convinced injectors are not working.

I towed a f-off caravan round Normandie for week, got home and the next morning she cranked over and would'nt fire once !
 
Nope - believe that's the difference between our issues.
Mine will not fire at all.
Replaced fuel filter , whipped out pump. Can't find any problems ??
Sterling immobiliser appears to function correctly i.e drops out power to pin 33 until de-activated.
Given up for the day - still leaning towards the Ecu but can't believe I'm that unlucky.

Well maybe i can !!
 
No - will take the Ecu into work tomorrow and pop the lid.

Pretty sure the RAC guy replaced the 30A fuse to the main relay Friday night.
I know he tested the main relay and found it was ok but looked like the contacts had seen some heat at some stage.
Replaced both relays to take them out of the equation.

Pulled covers from ECU - no visible damage. Capacitors held a charge ok.
Took delivery of a nanocom - checked injectors and found they weren't firing.
Verified with scope.
Put in refurbished ECU on Saturday - learnt security code with nanocom.
Engine still wouldn't fire. Injectors firing ok on test with nano com.
Checked output to injectors with scope - output looked noisy but nom 80V.
Checked fuel pressure at fuel temperature sensor connection - 4 bar at ignition on + 4 bar while engine cranking.
Pulled injectors and replaced seals.
Tried starting with 2 batteries - still no joy

Nanocom reports under AS10 menu - td5 learnt as 'no'
Checked this parameter is no with old edu
Nancom did report security code as learnt when I fitted new ecu - assume if fuel pump and injectors working then the immobiliser is disabled ?
Vehicle has sterling immobiliser fitted.

Anything else ??

I did and found the injector circuit faulty hence the refurbished ecu :scratching_chin:

All sorted now - took fookin loads of eezistart and lots and lots of cranking just to get the engine spluttering.
Once the engine caught it was as good as gold - well apart from the smokescreen that engulfed the neighbours for 15mins.
