TD5 or V8???

Apologies I didnt see we were on a 2nd thread page lol.
Well im in a total quandary again now.
The car is for my mrs and she will be driving it around the city most of the day doing her job as a social worker. If the mpg with gas is far less that petrol she will be living in morrisons?
Im edging again now towards a td5 with a remap taking the manifold into account.

I'm afraid that my own experience of the costs incurred by RR ownership & life in general (driven no doubt by my age) have resulted in an attitude of 'if you can't afford to run the thing on the fuel it was designed for, stick to a family car' If this indifferent attitude offends anyone on here then I apologise

We've had our D2 V8 for 6 years come July.

It has run on LPG all of that time, and we have never had any problems with the engine in that time that we could directly relate to LPG operation.

A correctly set up V8 on multipoint LPG is not far off the petrol figure on power, and we have had no issues with coils, plugs etc.

We did a trip to Holland and France last year towing our big trailer, 2000 miles without missing a beat. Just back from a similar trip last night, no problems.

We use double-platinum Champion plugs, run it on 10W-40 diesel oil and keep the header tank 1/2" above the recommended level.

The radiator is the original, we run the recommended OAT coolant at the recommended strength.

Agreed, ours has been good, but we did spend money where needed to sort it out. Too many V8's and Discoveries in general are run on a low budget basis which does them no good at all.

I'd have another one like a shot.

Keep a close eye on the chassis as the 2's have a reputation for corrosion in that area.

Change all the oils & filters before you go too far, especially axles, transfer box and gearbox.

Thanks all. Planning on getting the underneath sealed asap as we live on the beach where wood even rusts and getting the oils done at a local 4x4 specialist

TD5 is a great lump, I like it and I like petrol engines.

I have a Discovery

Defender took a big downgrade in 2007

Driven my D2 and a 2.2 Defender back to back, TD5 was nicest

If it's auto, make sure they change the oil and filter, many will tell you it's sealed for life, life can then be a tad short.

Its a manual however im still getting all the oils changed as suggested. Considering it was serviced in Dec 3k miles ago the oil looks really black. Is this normal?

Gearbox oils are not that common to change and are often missed by "normal" folk who are unaware that Land Rover products are not indestructible and actually need more servicing and care than that of modern contemporary 4x4's

Engine oil? Then yep. Dezul engine oil doesn't look clean very long.

Yes Goonarmy. The engine oil looks black as. Its also looking a bit low too. Speaking of which my mrs was driving behind me yesterday and she noticed some black smoke which we didnt see on the test drive. Hopefully nothing serious and hopefully a good oil change will cure??

Diesel is the logical choice however im still ripping my tdi out for a 3.5 with similar power and less fuel economy its all down to preferance... a well maintained v8 will be as reliable as a diesel and a poor maintained high milage diesel will s**t on you any chance it gets so dont worry with reliability either is good if looked after
