Td5 or tdci vote

I'm currently 16, I got quoted £3100 for a td5 and inthe price didn't change regarding a tdi or tdci engine. Yes I am in the fog and smog zone but I can currently get away with a late td5 90 hardtop and the tdci hardtop. Personally I prefer the look of the hardtop but either as long as a 90 or a 110 double cab. If I was very lucky a 110 utility would be nice

Then you are in the newer 2007-present then as utility was not a option in other models, I believe;)

How did you manage to get an insurance quote at 16?? And bear in mind the premium usually soars once you pass your test. :)

try going on the meerkat site , and put your age as 18 with a month old full car license , that will give you an idea of what the insurance costs will be , sit down before you press find !!!

You've obviously set your mind to a specific type of landy, I was wondering what makes your needs so specific? You say, " I can currently get away with a late td5 90 hardtop and the tdci hardtop" if you intend spending £13k on something that is not ideal (but you can 'get away' with) what is it that you intend doing to make your needs that specific?

Not trying to **** on your bonfire, just trying to grasp exactly your needs in order to offer the right advice :)

I phoned the insurance company's and told hem I was 17 and had just passed my test with the pass plus qualification and they was happy to help.
And I just prefer the look and feel of a panel van land rover. Feels more utilitarian and rugged. When I say I can get away with a panel van I mean a td5 for 2002 onwards is compliant but I'm just not sure how much longer that will be the case. As for the tdci panel vans I'm pretty sure they'll be compliant for years to come. The only things I intend on doing with the land rover would be;
-light offroad use once in a while
-long trips to the coast etc
-towing a light trailer(full sized quadbike)
-around town use.
I wouldn't mind a csw but I find them a bit more 'car like' so to speak.
I'd probably go for the 110 csw over a 90 csw.

jesus 16 and wanting a landrover defender. Your doomed!

If you have the money and thats what you want then do it. Statistically you will crash it in the first year anyway!

I think i would be getting myself a £500 ****ter for a year and then see if your driving warrants you getting a bigger more expensive motor in the future.

Whatever you do, declare everything or you get dick on a claim if found out!

Hey, I payed £1300 for my first car at 17 it was a 1.6 polo glx. I'm 23 now the polo didn't make the second mot but I've been driving as a named driver until last year when I bought my d2. A bit of talking to the insurance company and they honoured the no claims and I now pay £550.

Saying that, the little brother pays £2200 on a 1.3 KA as a first time driver.

I ride bikes, I pushed and pushed the insurance comp this year and they gave me £50 off... It's not a lot but then I'm only paying £150 now.

Get talking to them, get friendly and then take em for all they're worth!!

Not really more money than sense when you think about it. I'm going to get ripped off for any car that I try and insure so why not just do it in style instead. I got quoted the same price for my dads 200tdi defender so effectively buying a £500 ****ter and not worrying about crashing it will cost me more in the long run because my insurance premium will increase and I'll have to buy another car. Why not just jump in at the deep end, pay one lot of insurance and buy a nice defender that I will be cautious of when driving. That's the way I see it anyway.
Plus I have a fair bit of driving experience behind me(admittedly not a lot of road experience) but I've been driving a tractor since the age of 5, a quadbike since the age of 7 and I'm constantly driving my dads cars around the garden and offroad.

I'm 17 and insured my 90 as a van with aviva for £1500. That's with 3 points as well. I was quoted £900 before the points. Obviously there will be a difference between my old 90 and a newer td5 or tdci but just gives you an idea.

Or just get and older girlfriend with a few years driving experience and do it that way ;)

I reckon I could get my dads 200tdi panel van at around that price. I have considered the tdi's but as we've got one already I feel the need for something different.
Thanks for that though MR BFG it's helped a lot. Not many people our age think to try insuring a land rover but it just goes to show it is able to be done
