Changed my fuel filter today ,I have few problems to iron out first the old filter had no part no etc on it , the new filter l/rover part ESR 4686 looked the same " BUT" when I looked inside the filters both were different  old filter you could see straight through it but new filter had some sort of small metal plate up on the inside where the water sensor goes... so I put on the new filter . But the water sensor did'nt seem to tighten up that well .attached everything up put on ignition on started the disco no problem till she die a short death.. there was some strange noise like weird vibrating noise from the filter area I waited few times with ignition on then started engine to see if she would be ok but same noise kept coming back ..Then I thought do you bleed the filter somewhere ? I took the filter off to inspect it looked ok but still unsure about the new filter compared to the old on ? IE ( WITH THE HOLE STRAIGHT THROUGH ? ) I then had a good look at the water sensor and noticed the screw which connects to the filter was knackered ... SO I 'll get one tomorrow ... Question= 1 how tight do I put the water sensor just hand tight ? Question =2 do I need to bleed the filter ... Question =3 Anyone got the correct way to do this easy task :( ...... Sorry for the LONG... story it's almost a film script ,Any suggestion please ...

you have an air lock in the fuel system, bleed as follows:-

turn ignition on
pump throttle to the floor five times, you'll see the engine light will flash
leave it now till the engine light stops flashing, you should hear the pump working to bleed the air, makes a sort of squeel noise.

when engine light stops flashing, put foot all the way to the floor on the throttle and crank the engine, when it revs, take you foot off and let it idle for a couple of mins, while its running, check filter for leaks

That seems to have fixed it ,Should I only need to do this once because after I stopped the engine then try to start it again I still hear the pump working or is this just normal and never noticed the noise before.Anyway hopeful I've / you've helped me fix the problem and you should get " The medal of the day " for your efforts in helping people in distress ..

no problem, pleased to help as i know the cost of taking it to a dealer even for a simple fix (i work for land rover!!)

just drive the car as you normally would, the pump will quieten down, the noise you hear is the air being purged from the system and it will soon clear
