Hi

Defender Td5 starting /running problems and generaly being an absolute barstool !You have to crank it over for about 10 seconds when cold and when warm won't start at all. Was running sweet as up to suspected pump failure where it was switched off after a long run and wouldn’t start again .
Changed in tank pump for new genuine one, changed fuel filter, taken filter housing in bits and cleaned , changed injector copper washers and o rings (for genuine),the wireing harness is letting oil down to the ÉCU and have ordered a new one but no amount of cleaning in the meantime seems to make and difference and the basterd still won’t start easy and once started runs well, no smoke, ticks over fine etc but feels a bit flat/ slow on picking up when you give it some gas !!

I have had loads of TD5's and they have never done my box in like this one ????? ........ help ......... please ......
Thanks in advance

You need to hook it to a tester to see the fuel temp sensor's input and is it doesnt have a crank signal code logged, at the filter housing a cleaning might not be enough if you dont replace the air bleed valve too(WJN500110)... eventually try to bump start it and if it starts right away towed replace the starter cos it has an internal issue which disturbs the crank sensor's input... if no tester available replace the FT sensor in the FPR cos it's not expensive and check the crank sensor's plug to not be loosened...also make sure that the main relay is tight in the socket as well(C0063) ...see attachments

Thank you ! I had heard of the starter motor problem and was going to run until it was warmed up and stop at the stop of a hill and try and start her on the key and then see how easily she bumped started ! I have a fault code reader and only codes were for the Maf sensor ! Thanks once again matey ;-)

And just for info: I took the air bleed valve out as it appeared blocked and did'nt put it back, the rubber ducks beak anti return valve is goosed (goosed lol) as it does'nt close properly but this would'nt cause warm starting problems ! Would it ?

I dont know about the non-return valve cos mine doesnt have one and it starts OK... if you have tester see the live fuel temo input when the engine is warm, it should be 10 - 20*C lower than the coolant temp, it might not log a code but if the FT input is bad it will start hard

Thank you that man ! That's all very helpful and good to know ! I will check all that and get back to you .

Update on my mates TD5 Defender that has been the garage for over a year and still not running after 18months !!
It has had a new siemens fuel pump, filters, fuel pressure regulator, MAF sensor, new genuine injecteur washers and o-rings, injecteur harness, starter motor and the bitch is still not starting correctly !
Ignition on, pump Noisy, you purge the fuel system a few times, pumps quitens down and it will start so obviously a fuel/air leak problem there, ignition off and it will start again no problem. Drives no problem, stop it when warm and it won't start ? Bumps off no problem, thought this might be the starter motor, new starter motor and still won't start. Diesel temperature is 20° C less than the water temp !
So 2 problems here , logic says to now change the diesel filter head for the air leak/diesel return but my mate is proper ****ed off at spending money and not starting when hot is another mystery ?

Any help ? Please !
