Td5 con rods

Hi all,

Long story short,
I suspect my defender has 1 or more bent con rods. Runs ok just stutters on start up. I need to pull the engine out for various other faults including new piston rings.

My question to you all is, without owning an amp clamp and scope to do a compression test on starter motor feed, would I be able to tell once stripped which con rods are bent? Do they bend slightly? Piston protrusion would be different so I may be able to tell, or should I try and find an amp clamp?

Cool, thanks jamesmartin will strip it down and measure up.

No submarine use! Just swallowed its own coolant via a suspected crack in the head...:-(

Been there.... No 1 was visibly protruding one side of the bore, thumb nail test confirmed very canted. Once out you can see the bend, kept it for posterity.....dunno whether you could see it in situ from below, as there was no need to check with the head off already! Good luck, A

usually easy to spot without needing to measure.

We stripped a police transit that had been driven through, or rather into, water. One of the pistons was about 10mm down. the con rod was so bent it would not come up out the cylinder....had to burn one side off to get it out

That was my conrod tick over ok and seamed to pull ok but had a annoying missfire at low revs and smoked took me two years to suss it should have done a compression test first off but people were saying injector seals and oil in loom thingy oh well runs great now

+1 visible cant on the piston - and very visible bend in the rod once it's out of course......coolant for me too....grrrrr. Good luck, A
