Hi all,

Lately for some reason ive got a terrible thought in my head that one day my defender might get pinched. I think it started when someone told me that the thefts of landys seems to be slowly increasing.

So since as i have no extra security on my defender i was thinking of getting something like a disklok for my steering wheel as i have heard these are the best you can get for the simplicity of how they are fitted.

If anyone has one for sale let me know i am based in the glossop derbyshire area. but would consider paying postage if needed.

I wondered if anyone could also explain the alarm system fitted on a td5 county?

I have a 2004 td5 county station wagon with an alarm and im assuming or rather hoping it has some sort of immobiliser fitted although looking at my key i wouldnt of thought there was a transponder in it unless this is done via my remote control which operates the locking and alarm. Also i think i have a sensor on my bonnet which i can see and there is interior protection behind the side pillars above the headrests.

Is this system deemed good or bad?

No extra security is just asking for trouble so the more layers you can add the better (if they want it they will take it but if you can make it difficult then it can only help).

The genuine Disklok is very good, I have had one for a while now and it is about the most user friendly effective steering lock around. Like anything, they can be defeated but if you have nothing at the moment then it is definitely a start. They can be modified by welding a couple of steel bars across the rear (this prevents it being peeled off the wheel) but a standard one is better than nothing.
Buy on-line, most places charge so little for P&P now that it isn't worth trying to find one local. Check the size first and when in use I suggest fitting something like an old pillowcase over the wheel first to prevent the leather getting marked as the lock is quite heavy. When no in use it is stored in the case (supplied) behind the cubby-box.

I did look at a S/H one as I was going to have it modified straight away and it seemed a shame to damage the new paint with welding but they always seem to fetch good money and all were missing at least one of the keys so by the time you have added the replacement key & P&P it made sense just to buy new.

When you have got the steering lock sorted, look into a pedal lock next! ;)

I think I will invest in a disklok to start with then.

I was also thinking are you best leaving your defender with full steering lock on so that your defender will only drive in a circle or pointed to an obstruction. Atleast that makes it difficult to roll it towards a truck or tow vehicle perhaps?

What are the thoughts on a pedal lock? I was thinking that you could still pinch a defender with the pedals locked up? Simply remove handbrake and pull out of gear then drag it away or roll it whilst someone steers it?

Does this make a disklok better?

Also a tracker would be good but so far I have only seen them for like £300 and then you pay annually for monitoring etc... To me it seems a bit expensive to pay for something that you may never use only if your vehicle was stolen.

Are there any more affordable ones?

Does the td5 have an immobiliser?

Thanks for your suggestions my only worry with a tracker is do they work if the landy has been put in a metal garage shed or container say or can they loose gps signal in remote hilly areas etc
