hi ,i have just purchased the above it is an auto gearbox.Iknow its a broad question like how long is a piece of string,but has anyone got any doos and donts or things to watch out for.many thanks, alan
 
Hi Alan, big welcome to the looney (errm I mean Landy Zone) whats the service history ? Are you a DIY mechanic ? I do all my own, not difficult and saves a fortune over LR dealer costs.

make sure you change the engine oil per the schedule, and it will be good for an avg of 200k . . . worth getting waxoyled if it hasn't been done and you intend keeping for a while, and check for corrosion under the boot floor, front inner wings and rear wheel arches (the area you can see with the rear doors open . . . .

Apart from that, Disco 2's are pretty reliable and it should give you good service !!
 
If you are going to tow heavy stuff like horseboxes you should change to synthetic Dexron III oil like Shell Donax TX. If you overheat your oil the gearbox will fail chop chop. And as there is no dipstick on a DII it is a bit of a pain to check the colour.

And the pullaway on a cold DII auto is slower than a milk float. If pointing uphill they don't pull away at all.
 
Must be some blo*dy fast milk floats about then :D :D

(and anyway, if you got a horse box (and big fat horse innit) you can always select low range if your pulling away on a steep hill (after all that's 'one' use for it) :cool:
 
Geez, most Disco owners think that low range is a gas stove on the floor. Maybe our milk floats are faster than yours. The average Disco II auto won't beat a bicycle. Maybe being at 5000 ft makes the difference.
 
Thanks to Disco Steve. Car has full Landrover dealer service history. I am semi DIY and do the easy stuff myself. My friend is a mechanic and does the majority of the work for me.
I don't understand very well the low range pullaway bit, do you have an idiots guide to using the different ratio's and the diff lock?
Thanks to Jim Attrill. I will be towing a horse trailer with a couple of horses, one large and one small (shetland).
I don't understand the bit (a pain to check the colour).
As for slow pullaway in a TD5, compared to my old 300TDI Auto, 255,000 on the clock, the TD5 feels like I am on Santa Pod raceway!!!!
 
It's all in the user manual, it is prefctly ok to select Low Range if pulling a load up a steep hill, or maybe just slow manouvering, say reversing, just makes it a bit easier on the old girl !!

Diff lock should be selected if you think traction may be lost, say in mud, sand or other slippery surfaces.
