I have a 52 plate td4 which has just developed a non starting problem. After parking up and leaving it for an hour when i came back all the engine does is just turn over and over without firing up .in the end the battery has gone flat . Does anyone know where i can start to look to try and get it started.

could be the fuel pump in the tank packed up, take one of the pipes out on the filter housing, they are quick release couplings, and see if any fuel coming out when the ignitions on

chances are, faulty injector. spray easy start into the air intake and see if it fires. if it does, do an injector leak off test to confirm which one is faulty, then replace.

simples.

if it's only happening after a bit of use and the engine could still be warm i'd try the cam position sensor. won't happen first thing in the morning as engine is cold.

I would do the leak back test first. It ranges from free to about £ 30 for a kit.

Most of what I've learnt about cam sensors says they rarely fail (although clearly they do on occasion). Thing is I don't know of a conclusive cam sensor test although some people spray them with freeze spray because apparently they break down when hot. Not sure how wise it is to spray a freeze spray onto a hot engine part though. Basically you just have to try one that you know works which normally means a new one at £ 70 a throw.

Also before you do any of that try what Optimus said about the easy start or just give it a push to see if it starts then. If it does chances are it's one or more injectors so do the leak back test, it's very common for the injectors to need replacing on the td4.

well after leaving my freelander overnight in the local car park i returned to it and decided to use my second remote and key, i connected up my battery jump pack and the engine burst into life. so after everything that went on yesterday with it just cranking over im none the wizer now? is it coincedence about the second remote making it work or am i missing something else. the trouble is now im worried if i go out on a drive will it do it again.any ideas why its returned to normal

May be a stated above it could be the cam sensor as it only affect the starting when the engine is hot. So drive around a bit park up at home than see if it starts if it does not then leave it a hour go back and try again if it starts then good indication its the sensor.
