Hi Looking for a reason [mechanical/electronic] why when cold on starting engine runs rough some
times, occasionally small amount of blue smoke then settles down. This stops when engine gets hot,
replaced MAS sensor also have had computer reset & faults cleared, ran well & towed a caravan 6000k home from Darwin with out a problem. Now 5 weeks later has gone back to rough idle/bit of smoke, in process of replacing turbo hoses when they arrive from the UK also replacing new inlets seals as starting to leak oil. [blue smoke?] anyway any suggestions please to a Freelander owner down under. It is a 2004 Freelander 1 TD4, 175000 k.

Bit of a bump for you... but could this be a issue with a piston ring? Allowing some oil up into the combustion area and general rough running, but then sealing up enough when warm. Might a compression test show up any problems?

I had a (petrol) Disco that started getting rough as guts when it was cold but returned to 'normal' once warmed up. I was told that was compression, but to be honest 'normal' running for that motor was always problematic in the 7 years I had it - so that was the last straw and I outed it and never fixed it to confirm the diagnosis.

As you're in Aus, I presume you're talking kms and 175k kms isn't very high mileage, but a 6k road trip is in any units :)
