Td4,Auto,strange noise from nsf of engine bay

Hi,i am a newbie to Land Rovers and have just bought a 2004,TD4 HSE Auto.
Sometimes just after starting the car a 'whistling, groaning' noise comes from the nsf of the car,carries on for up to about 30 seconds then goes.The noise continues even if the engine is switched off.It doesnt seem to affect the car in any way,does anyone have an idea what this may be please?Graham
 
I think you might be hearing the sounds of your fuel burning heater. This is warming up your cooling system. I'm not a TD4 owner but I wouldn't have thought you would hear too much noise unless the pump is knackered.
 
As Darmain says it's just your FBH. Nowt to worry about, it gets yer heater warm a bit quicker these cold mornings. :)

Next time yer hear it check out the little exhaust pipe down in front of the NSF wheel
 
Here we go again, I'm amazed how many people buy these, or any, cars without finding out what they do.

I read forums/internet, buy the manuals, find out as much as I can before and after I buy something so I get the most suitable that I can afford
rather than,
how cool it'll look on me driveway - but then this is what saved Landrover.

I guess some would say that such research should have steered me well away from the Freelander , but hey, personal circumstances had meant bye-bye to my TD5 Disco and I needed something that could tow 2 tonnes, would do 10mpg better than the Disco, didn't need full off-road capability, had a reasonably high seating position and would go under the barrier at the local tip.
So, 2 years ago I bought a TD4 Auto with 42,000 on the clock and being year 2000 Xreg would retain the £185 Road Fund Licence.
Had a few problems but, overall it has still cost me less to maintain and run than the Disco.


Anyhow, bitch mode/off, - back to the topic, and a repeat of often given info:-

On the TD4 there is a Webasto Fuel Burning Heater under the nearside bumper.
This is set to fire up when the engine is started and the outside ambient temperature is below 5deg Celcius.

Listening carefully you can hear the dedicated pump under the offside rear wheelarch supplying fuel to the heater, and, without having to listen carefully at all, a sizable "Jet Engine" type sound from the nearside front bumper.
This will continue for a few minutes after the engine has been turned off, may be accompanied by an alarming stream of exhaust smoke from the same area and even very small embers dropped on the road.

The purpose is to get the water pre-heated just before it enters the cabin heater matrix and then passing back into the engine to aid warming up.

On the whole a very useful feature on this car, but rather scary to the unexpecting witnesses.


It is possible to buy a couple of enhancements for this system - one is a timer that will fire it up on yer drive so yer car is warm before you rush out toast in hand etc.

The other is a remote control so you can blip it into life from the comfort of yer downstairs toilet.

These seem a fine idea except that LR will relieve you of £1200 for the pleasure of a prewarmed environment for yer Armani suit, I'm holding that sum for a more useful purpose - when the Jatco Autobox or IRD goes west with the setting sun.
 
Hi,thank you to all for your replies and the lecture(that told me!),ive got a bit to learn about Land Rovers.As i bought it for the Mrs i sugested she goes to evening classes to learn mechanics but she dont seem to keen!She says it does look good on the drive(as mentioned in that very helpful reply,thanks) but i still think the Merc SL55 looks better.Cheers.

:D welcome to a very good choice of Freelander, the Merc would look good, but it'll never tow a boat up a wet muddy slipway :D


The Freelander is a vey capable vehicle with a number of features that people seem to have no idea about. Enjoy it, and learn about it, there is some very good advice on this site.

On mine, MY01, there is a FBH as well and even I've read the owner's manual back and forth nothing is mentioned in it about the device, so ....:p :p

Ahh, so thats what all the noise is about. Does the fuel pump for this heater make a ticking sound like a big clock, because I think mine might.

And I dont know much else about my wonderful vehicle either, dont stop me driving and loving it though.

Read your reply on noise from FBH, I am new to the zone and have a TD6 05 vogue making humming noises from passenger side front? Do you know if this has a similar system?

I have no idea if they do.

And, on the freelander you will hear a ticking noise "like a big clock" in the offside rear wheelarch
 
Thank you Mark2 ...saved me hours reading through the manual and getting greasy fingers!! must admit though when i buy a car a Webasto heater wouldn't be first onmy list, save that sort of thing for my yacht ..if i can ever afford one!
