EDIT! The lock actuator does earth through the CDL switch and the driver door ourtstation. That's just so it knows it's locked though don't you think? Rather than just ajar.

There is a tailgate switch though.... and that earths at the RHS tailgate lights. A good clean of all those contacts would probably help everything. Nothing I can see about the drivers door ajar microswitch though.

I have got a lazy microswitch for the interior lamp drivers side, takes ages for the lamp to come on when it's cold outside, quicker or instant when it's warm. Does that particular micro switch just provide the earth for the tailgate latch and it doesn't trigger anything else?
To be honest I don't know. Electrikery is my weaker point

Maybe take the cover off the inner lower tailgate incase 🤔 And take a big cuppa for a good looking at;).

That's given me a thought...the hole I made in the card allows me to open the lower hatch with my finger or a screwdriver but I've never checked to see if it would also release the top hatch as that has never failed to open (until yesterday).
I shall fiddle somewhat tomorrow if its not too cold or rainy or windy or something.

There is no electrickery, first press releases the upper tailgate, second press releases the lower tailgate, it's all mechanical.
So.
If I press it once then push on the upper (closing it) then push again why does it open the top again first?

I don’t know but there has to be away of knowing the top is open.

As far as I can see. it's purely mechanical. When the top latch is undone, the mechanism will unlock the lower latch.
If you re-close the upper tailgate, the latch is in the closed position so if the button is pressed again, it's the upper tailgate that will open again not the lower.

Ok I can agree.
Maybe the solenoid has a spring “to unlatch” so it will pull 1 then 1 again (does that make sense?). Or a ratchet that resets 2 clicks
But how does the tailgate open warning work?

I don’t know am not about to go looking this time of night :)

Never looked at the operation of the tailgate open warning but it will be from the upper tailgate latch mechanism.

Maybe micro switches? 🤔
