Tailgate window faulty............Aaaaggghhh.

Hi all,
not been here before, but I trust you'll look after me.
My problem is as follows : I have a 2000 Freelander TD4 ES, it's a 5 door.
This afternoon I went to put my tailgate window down & it made a horrid sound as it lowered. I then stopped & tried to raise it but only got that horrid sound again.
I then lowered it completely, but, it won't come back up, and it's freezing!
I don't have a garage so took the door trim off to see if there was anything obvious.........I found these in the bottom of the door.....



......not the £1 coin, that's there for scaling purposes.

I then managed to get the window 80% up by getting someone to press the switch whilst I pushed the glass up by hand. Each time, when the switch was released, the motor tried to lower the window but only managed about 1" or so.
I can't set my alarm now as the window is not properly closed & I don't know what to do...........I need it fixed soon, but I also need it fixed as cheaply as possible too!

try this slime58,
open the back door, lock the lock using a screwdriver. this simulates the door shutting on the striker. Now get someone to operate the switch while you assist the window going fully up. If the window goes fully up operate the lock as if you was opening the door. the window should drop about an inch or so, you may need to help it down. If it does this jump in the boot and get your assistant to shut the door, as it shuts on the striker both assist in helping the window up. You will have to climb through the car to get out. If this works do not open back door again until you are ready to fit a new window regulator/cable. its a quick fix but at least the car will be safe .

do I take it that it needs a new regulator, are those what the bits are from?
If so, where's the best place to get one from & are they easy to fit?

How good are you at fixing things ?
The rebuild kits on ebay are cheap and not to bad to fit if you have the tools/time/patience .
Worked well on my rear door window but not done the back door yet !!

I'm sure you've fixed it by now, but looking at the parts you found, there's a bit missing! There should be a spring seat, a piece of plastic (it was green on mine) which the spring presses against, if this is missing, the spring and cable will mangle up again, on my Freelander it had started to chew through the casing itself before the cable finally snapped, the last person to work on mine had missed it off. If you can't find it, use a washer which is big enough to let the plastic tube pass through but not the spring
