Hi guys thanks for all comments. Taken on board, what are the common faults on the td4 freelander 1? And bhp? Just wondered so I know what to check out for.

VCU/IRD failure (4x4 system) is probably the most notable failure for the TD4 model. It's thought to be less common in newer models as some factory modifications were made. (2001 or later)

The FL1 TD4 manual has 110 bhp and 260 Nm of torque.

how the **** are defenders better than a disco? and how are they rot boxes compared to a disco2? every defender ive owned which is now 5, has been rotten. rotten rear x member, rotten bulkhead, rotten outriggers, rotten doors, rotten seat boxes, they might be good offroad but a standard disco is just as good offroad. theyve all been abused off road so constantly need stuff doing to them like new ball joints, bushes. i used to think they were the mutts nuts but disco2's all the way now. maybe just maybe when ive got the money in the distant future id buy a "NEW" defender
 
Freelander is a car based offroader its not bad for what the are. They are known for electronic and mechanical faults Do lots of research before buying. Freelanders can be quite cheap because of the known faults with various models. Discoverys are the cheapest mainly because they are rot boxes as can be said of RR Classics and some defenders however Defenders hold their value because they have no real body shell to rot only a relativly easily replacable bulkhead and chassis. Defender is considered the best offroad vehicle std and is far less car like that a Discovery and the comfy RR Classic.

V8 now if you can genuinly afford to get 15 to 22Mpg running a V8 (Mabe as much as 28 on a run!) then you are a richer man tha I (not that hard). If you think fitting an LPG tank will be cost efective forget it! I have only ever seen 1 LPG kit that I would call decent and that was done years ago before they introduced LPG in garage forcourts. It will take you a fair ammount of time to recoup the initial cost of installation and poping AFM (If EFI) every now and then will add to the "cheap fuel" Tdi's hold the money as the engines are pretty bullet proof. I have seen an engine after 120K mies and the bores still had hatch markings in from the factory not worn at all (seen a few now). Very good reliable engine if kept serviced.

no realy body shell? so when you change the chassis what do you take off of it then? :doh:

defenders are rot boxes too, bulkhead, x member, doors, seat box, outriggers, gearbox x member, id never have another 1 unless it was new

how the fook is a bulkhead and chassi easy to change?

this is my opinion and im not up for a bitch fight about what landys better, they were all designed to be capable off roaders, a standard disco 1 or 2 is as capable as a standard defender, youtube will prove that if you look

think what jai was trying to say was, a standard defender can accomodate larger tyres than a disco (235/85 on a def and 235/70 disco as standard) giving better axle clearance also compared to a 90 a disco isnt as capable off road with the having better approach angles, lower gearing etc.

a disco is more than capable and will be enough for 99% of folk on here but it was always a design of compromise (comfort and capability)

oh and RichM if a thread on here stays on track for more than a couple of posts on here it has done well. How about you start another poll about it ;)
 
get your claws out peeps. lol, ok the disco might be good for off road but it looks like a beaten omelette thats been left on the hob to long. just my opinion.
 
Oh I'm missing somones ass spanking Oh its mine well......... I know its about freelanders and the OP clearly isn't taking the hints that may save him a life of pain so I'll keep it brief and to the point.

Just to cover what Disco2shaun has said.

Any monkey or 10 year old can undo bolts and replace parts. Defender is just this there really isnt many bolts to remove the bodywork. Simple! Bodyshelled vehicles require a complete shell swap everything (If you can get one) or a skillful welder which puts people off that are not welders and this is one of the main reasons defenders hold their value opposed to a Disco.

Std Vehicle VS Standard vehicle ther is no comparison between discovery 1 2 3 or later vs a defender for offroad. Discos exceed on road far better than defenders because they are more suited. Anyone that believes that their disco or any disco in std format VS a Defender Std format is living in a false world sometimes it comes down to physics. The standard tyre fitment on a defender is better greater a disco or RR Classic Std format which helps dependant on model 90 or 110 depends on what goodies you get Std. 90 well it will **** over a disco because of its size and overhangs or lack of. A 110 you get HD rear shafts and its built to carry weight (its built strong far greater than a disco).

Anyway back to Freelanders OP you have been warned they can be a nightmare they might be ok if your lucky or find a goodun. (Hell I'm even considering one for the Mrs as her next car) But they are not a defenders nor discos by any means.
