I have just purchased a 300tdi which I intend to do some mild off roading (fun days & green laneing etc) I also intend to fit some slightly larger M/T tyres and was wondering what suspension mods people would reccomed ie 1", 1.5" or 2" lift (I don't want to affect the steering & on road manners too much or get into having to change prop shafts etc).
I have seen that M&M 4x4 do a suspension kit with no lift but cranked rear trailing arms for better articulation, does anyone have any experience with this kit?
If I were to fit a 1" or 1.5" lift would I still need to fit corrected radius arms?
Also, what if any, are the real world" advantages to bottom mounted dislocation cones Vs top mount dislocation cones?.

You can go up to 2" easily without needing to modify anything else to be honest. and at that amount of lift, only greenlaning and doing fun days there is no way you will need to use dislocation cones. Your first mod should be tall tires! A nice set of insa turbo saharas seem to be fairly standard, and well reviewed by all, this will get your diffs off the ground and give you better clearance.

What is it? you say 300tdi, but is it a disco? a defender?

Welcome to the forum too :)

a lift WILL effect youe road handling. as stated ,mild offroad will not require lift. you can go upto 265/75r16 without lift. i suggest you get some decent boots in this size 1st. although mud terrains will also effect the road handling slightly...

Its a slippery slope to say the least. you cant have the best of both worlds, so its just a compromise as to how much road or how much mud driving you want to do.

tit for tat

you will be amazed at how far these motors will go with a good grippy set of boots, In standard form.

Dont go spendin yer hard earned on yer mods till you know it's current limitations...even on yer road tyres.

that said, if you wanna put on your suspension lift... do a search - it's been covered more times than Paris Hilton..!

Thanks for the replys, I should have mentioned it was a disco.
I was going to start with a set of either BFG M/T's or I like the look of the Kumho KL71's put some under body protection and see how it goes.

Get some recovery points as well-you'll need em eventualy

ooooooo er. ignore my previous statement of 265/75's then. I dont think they will fit a standard disco. as mentioned, get recovery points front and rear. as for underbody i would go with a pair of diff guards and a steering guard. your disco will need the steering guard as they sit lowwwwwwww, esp in the ruts :D

Strengthened steering bars might be a good idea too as the rear one is quite prone to bending when in deep ruts etc ;)

IMHO the 2" lift fitted to the Mrs's 300TDI Disco has actualy improved it's road manners :D ............ i did use the Bearmach heavy duty grade blues though ;)

BTW ................ IF you go for a 2" lift fit extended brake hoses too ;)

Thanks for all the input, I think I'll be needing a few more beer tokens.

Whilst I've been doing some searches for steering & diff guards etc I have seen some suspension kits which are being sold with cranked rear trailing arms & advertised with the fact that no lift is needed.

I liked the idea of these kits as the more pics & videos I see of off roading etc the more challenging the terrain I'll be willing to attempt (Avon Dasett kind of thing). I think my early statement of mild off roading is allready finding its way out the window, however I still need to think about the budget and don't want to affect the road manners too much.

Has anyone had any experience with this kind of set up?

I was thinking (sorry I know it's a bit early for that) of fitting the following:

STD or STD HD springs (I thought HD might give marginal lift)
extended shocks or lower/dropped shock mounts (or both which ever would work best with std height springs)
cranked rear trailing arms
dislocation cones F & R
extended brake lines

How does that sound or have I just made myself sound like a complete muppet and my motor handle like a complete sack of ****

Any reccomendations on where to buy / advise (west midlands area) or should I wait till LR show at the end of the month and quiz who ever is there?

If you want to fit bigger tyres (taller) you'll need the lift to get the full benefit from em really as they might catch your arches on full articulation.

HOWEVER ........... before the 300 got it's lift the arch trimming seemed to work ok with the 235/85/16's fitted :)

As for the cranked rear arms ................. not tried em meself but will be getting some which will be used WITH the 2" lift already in place ;)

Went and did a pay and play today, I have a 200tdi disco on 265/75 16s? (think thats right) have trimmed the arches, got most places but a lift would have been handy when I tried for that steep bank and bent my front bumper.

That's pretty much all a lift is good for, better approach angles!

rusty, why do you want dissy cones? I'm pretty sure you'll never use them!

not strictly true again matey :D

ground clearence is limited by the hight of your axels..so on standerd tyre's you would still have the same clearence at the axel with 2 inch, 4 inch or standerd ride hight..

as nelly says it allows for a steeper approch/decent angle.... and allows for crossing deeper water/ruts with out flooding or grounding your under carriage..but your axel will still high center you in ruts or high ground...

it does allow bigger tyres thou which increases your axel hight..

'till you got the cash for dislocation cones or X-springs...

stick a couple of good quality jubilee clips around the top of the spring and clamp the spring to the chassis bearer, this 'll help stop it popping out!

some people swear by that method. others buy expensive dissy cones...!

Agreed but i think most people would know that i was talking about undercarriage ground clearance ;)

Obviously a spring/shock lift kit will make no difference to axle height ........ but do a lift and fit bigger tyres like i have done and you can follow Defender ruts no problem ;)
